Small but mighty!
As with other concentrated washing liquids, Surf Small and Mighty promises excellent cleaning with less liquid. This can save us all money (especially if the products are on offer) and offers environmental benefits too. The company claims that using the Small and Mighty range is equal to an over 40% reduction in packaging and 60% reduction in water usage. It's also designed so you can wash your clothes at a cooler temperature with the same results you'd expect from a hotter wash.
The range also features essential oils so the fragrances are a bit unusual! Variants include Tropical Oasis with ylang ylang and lily, Mediterranean Orchard with lemons and mandarin flower, Secret Garden with lavender and jasmine and the version I'm reviewing here Mystic Waterfall of lotus flower and wild freesia.
This is currently selling in the usual supermarkets for about £4.50 for a 28-wash bottle. Bigger sizes are also available - and look out for offers too!
Get the washing on
So to wash your clothes you can simply add a capful of liquid to the draw of your machine - or there is a small plastic cup that clicks over the lid that you can remove, fill and pop in the wash. I tend to do the latter. The liquid is a creamy white colour and the fresh fragrance is immediately noticeable. Now while I have to be honest and say that lotus flowers and freesias do not immediately spring to mind, and neither do waterfalls, it is a lovely clean, fresh scent.
Since using these concetrated liquids I have started washing at 30 degrees - unless I am washing particularly spoiled items. Okay I'm not going to save the planet but it's good to feel you're doing your bit - even if it is just a little bit!
Soft clean and smelling fresh
But of course this would all be pointless if the results were no good. But I have just today got to the end of my bottle of this liquid and I honestly have no complaints at all. It leaves clothes perfectly clean and well washed, and I never notice any stains or anything being left behind. Clothes also feel soft, meaning I never feel the need to add fabric conditioner to my wash when using this.
Also important for me is the scent and this liquid really leaves the clothes with a lovely fresh scent. Again I have to say I don't detect too much of a floral fragrance - instead everything just smells really lovely and clean. And best of all I find the smell lingers so even items left in drawers for a while still have the lovely clean scent.
Makes me mighty happy!
All in all I can' t really fault this liquid. It may not be the cheapest washing product in the world but it is often on offer and the results are really good. This concentrated liquid lets you wash clothes at lower temperatures, with less liquid with excellent results. It leaves clothes really clean and soft, and smelling gorgeous too! Look out for special offers to get the most out of this range! I definitely plan to try out more of the lovely sounding fragrances.
When it comes to washing powder I normally stick to Surf, Daz or Ariel as I know that these brands do not irritate my eczema-prone skin. When I last ran out of washing powder, I had a look at the various options available in ASDA and found that Surf was on special offer. I decided to plump for the Surf Small and Mighty for two reasons. Firstly it was the same price as the Surf powder, but you got 28 washes from one bottle, whereas you only got 25 washes from a box of Surf powder. Three washes may not seem like much, but I am saving towards my wedding and would also dearly like a new kitchen, so every penny counts. The second reason for my purchase was that the bottle was much smaller than the box of powder and with my cleaning cupboard stuffed to bursting point, I thought a smaller packaging size was the most sensible choice! There were three fragrances available to me - sunshine orchard, tropical oasis and mystic waterfalls. I chose to purchase mystic waterfalls as I had already tried the other two and I like to experience new products.
The product comes packaged in a bottle which has a cellophane label adorned with blue flowers. It's actually very pretty and the bright blue colouring appealed to me. On top of the bottle is a small plastic cup which actually doubles as a dosing device and has measurements clearly marked on the side. Full instructions for use (including diagrams) are shown clearly on the side of the bottle.
The product can be used in either the drawer or the drum of the washing machine. It also states that it is suitable for hand-washing, although this is something I hate with a passion, so I've never tried it for this purpose! I always choose to place the liquid directly into the drum, as whenever I pour a liquid into the washing machine drawer it seems like it is running down the back of the machine before the drawer is even closed. A standard load needs just 35ml of liquid, whereas a large load needs 52ml. You will also need to use 52ml if you live in a hard water area.
The liquid is white in colour and has a pleasant aroma. The packaging states that it contains lotus flowers and wild freesia alongside essential oils, although I do not find it overly floral. There is a faint floral scent to it, but the main scent, as silly as it sounds, is simply clean washing. It has a very simple, clean aroma to it, which I absolutely adore. With it being cold and rainy at the moment I dry my clothes indoors and find that when hanging up on an airer the whole room is filled with the scent of clean laundry which I love - and it saves on air freshener!
I have found that this product is fantastic at getting my clothes clean, when using the recommended amount of 35ml per wash. It leaves my white clothes looking fresh and bright and managed to get the muddy stains out of my fiancés tracksuit bottoms when he's come home from his weekly football match. The best thing though, in my opinion, is the scent left behind from this product which, as I have already mentioned, is gorgeous. I absolutely love getting into a bed with sheets freshly washed in this product, as it's such a beautiful, comforting smell. My clothes always feel nice and soft after using this, but I do usually use a fabric conditioner too, so that's probably why.
Both myself and my fiancé suffer from eczema and for me in particular, washing detergents can be a trigger. Thankfully I can report that neither of us has experienced any adverse effects as a result of using this product.
As far as I know this fragrance is only available in the 28 washes size at the moment, but I'm hoping they will introduce other products/sizes of this fragrance, because I really do adore it and prefer it to the sunshine/tropical fragrances also from Surf. I paid just £3 for my 1 litre bottle from ASDA on a 'rollback' offer, although the usual price is £4.49.
On the whole I have been really pleased with this product and it is definitely the best of the Surf products I've tried to date. It smells gorgeous, it's not overly expensive compared to other branded laundry products and it leaves my clothes clean and soft. I would definitely buy this again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
