Advantages: Cheap. Have a soft side and wire side.
Disadvantages: Don't last on tougher grime.
I buy these Tesco sponge pan cleaners frequently, at least every 2-4 weeks. I use them for various things including washing dishes, cleaning worktops, cleaning surfaces in the bathroom and for cleaning specialist areas or items such as kitchen appliances and dog bowls. The sponge pan cleaners are the most basic sponge you can buy in the store and they are almost identical to the value sponges from either Morrisons or Asda. They cost 19p for a pack of 5.
They come packaged in a cellophane wrapper. The sponges are approximately 10cm by 5cm in size. They have a white sponge side and on one side is a thinner green wiry strip. The soft side is perfect for anything that's mildly dirty and the wiry side is for cleaning up tougher stains and grime. I would like the sponges to be different colours just so I can have two out at the same time and use them for different purposes without them getting mixed up. It's apparently unhygienic to use the same item to clean kitchen worktops to also clean dishes. So if I already have one of these sponges out to do the dishes and then get another one out to do the worktops I can't store them together.
The length of time one of these sponges lasts depends on what you use them on and the degree of dirt involved in cleaning. If you are using them on mildly greasy dishes with no dried on bits then they will last longer. Tougher things like burnt pans mean you will scrub harder and wear the sponge down. I've used these to try and clean my oven and gone through several in five minutes. They are no match for actual wire scourers or for more sturdy pan scrubbers when cleaning things like wire grills. The wiry strip becomes quite worn and fluffy after a very short period of time and is no longer effective.
You can use these with cleaning products in different ways. When I'm doing dishes it is easy to either apply washing up liquid direct to the sponge on either side or direct to the dirty dish. You can create a good foam if you apply directly to the sponge. I wouldn't say the sponge holds the foam as well as say a bath sponge might though - it seems quite porous. One thing I've noticed is that if you use a coloured cleaning fluid for things like all purpose cleaning then the sponges can stain with that colour. Whilst this doesn't affect the sponge's effectiveness it doesn't look all that nice.
I think these sponge pan cleaners are fine for short term use. In reference to good hygiene I actually wouldn't like to keep a dish sponge longer than I do with these, even if it had not deteriorated, so these have an acceptable shelf life. I do tend to buy them quite often but at only 19p a packet I think the price is totally reasonable. Ultimately I would suggest these are best used on dishes that are only mildly dirty whilst you should expect the sponges not to last as long if using frequently on harder to clean dishes. You can also use these on appliances and worktops with good results.
They are available in store or online at Tesco.
Summary: Cheap enough to be able to use frequently.
