Advantages: Leaves toilet clean and sparkling

Disadvantages: does not remove limescale

I live in a hard water area and although I clean my toilet several times a week I noticed that it had started to cake with limescale both above and below the water line. This did not appear to be too thick so I decided that the next time I replaced my toilet cleaner I would look for one, which claimed to remove limescale too.

When it comes to buying toilet cleaner I am not particularly loyal to any brand and usually just opt for whatever is on offer or relatively cheap. As I was looking for something that would remove limescale I was paying a little more attention to the product claims than I would normally would. I spotted a couple that claimed to remove limescale and purely because it was the cheapest I opted for the toilet duck Ocean force variety.

The toilet cleaner comes housed in a white plastic bottle with a picture of a duck on the front floating in a wave, which is deep turquoise in colour. Each bottle contains 750ml of cleaner and costs £1.29. This I think is fairly good value as a bottle can last a couple of months.

The toilet duck range looks a little different to the other products on the market due to its unique neck which has an additional bend in it which makes it easier to get the product into those hard to reach areas such as under the rim. I personally think the neck adds a certain 'cuteness' to the bottle as to me it resembles a duck craning its neck to look at me. To further enhance the duck effect the lid is coloured yellow to resemble a ducks beak.

Toilet duck clams to offer 4 in 1 protection for your toilet by removing 99.99% of germs, removing limescale, freshens and cleans above and below the waterline. The lid itself us easy enough to open despite the fact that it requires some squeezing and then twisting, presumably to make it less easy for children to open it. I often find that lids such as this are often adult proof too as I tend to struggle to open them! However in this case I was pleased to that this was not the case and I was able to open this bottle without too much effort.

Once opened I squirted some of this under the toilet rim, around the bowl and below the water line. I then used a brush to scrub around the bowl and above and below the waterline, paying particular attention to the areas covered with limescale, ensuring they were adequately covered with the product. The cleaner itself is a deep blue colour, which fits in with the ocean theme, and one that I found extremely pretty. It had quite a strong smell - quite chemical like, rather like disinfectant and not what I would call particularly ocean like.

Following the instructions on the bottle I left this to work for just over an hour before flushing. Just before flushing though I did use a brush to scrub the areas affected by limescale again to try and get these to come off. Once flushed my toilet was left sparkling clean. It also left my toilet smelling quite fresh and not as chemical like as it did prior to flushing. This smell also lingered for a few hours, which was nice. I don't have a microscope but the cleanliness of the toilet along with the claims that this product kills 99.99% of germs is reassuring.

However I was quite disappointed to notice that this hadn't made the slightest bit of difference to the limescale. I thought that perhaps with repeated use the limescale would be removed but despite using this three times a week and scrubbing quite intensely the cleaner did not make a blind bit of difference to the limescale. I have since found another cleaner that worked it's magic in just a couple of uses and I should be reviewing this in due course.

Overall I was pleased with the toilet ducks cleaning abilities and it did leave my toilet gleaming so as a cleaner in itself I would have no hesitations in recommending. However I had specifically bought this product for its limescale removing claims and in this respect I was left quite disappointed. Overall I can only reward this product a middle of the road 3 stars.

Summary: Doesn't live up to its promises
