Vanish In-Wash Liquid
Advantages: Gets rid of 95% stains, esp oily stains
Disadvantages: Irritates skin
I have tried most of the Vanish products and find them all very useful. They are multi-purpose stain removers and use 'active' oxygen to lift the stain from the cloth. They are supposed to be especially good for dried in stains up to 5 days old. (Never tried such old stains myself). It also contains a stain softener which loosens the stain and makes it easier to remove. It can be used on colours, unlike bleach.
The active ingredient is sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate.
It says that you shouldn't use it on wool, silk, leather, wood, metals and on clothes with metal fasteners. Having said that, I always add some to each wash even though there are metal zips and fasteners and have no problems. I guess you just shouldn't put the stuff directly onto metal.
It also cautions that you should check for colour fastness first, again, I haven't had any problems with Vanish making the colours run.
Once the powder has been mixed with water (for handwashing), you should not leave it in a sealed container because it will release oxygen and may leak.
1 scoop is approx 60g. The recommended method is to add half a scoop to your normal detergent, one scoop for tough stains.
If soaking, add hald a scoop to 4L of warm water, not more than 40 degrees celcius. colours can be soaked for 1 hour, whites not more than 6 hours, then wash as usual.
For tough stains, you can mix it into a cream: quarter of a scooop in 100ml hot water and stir until you get a thick foaming cream which is applied directly to the cloth. Leave for less than 10mins then wash.
For a pre-treating soak, you can add 2 tsp to 500ml warm water and soak for up to half an hour then wash as usual.
I have also used the gel form of Vanish which is easier as you don't need to mix it into a cream as above. You can just put abt a tsp directly onto the stain. Rub and leave on. The instructions say not to leave on for more than 5 minutes, but i often leave it for about 10-15 mins without problems. Having said that, my mum has left it overnight and found it had burned a hole in the cloth by the next morning! So beware. You should not let the gel dry on the cloth before washing it off.
It can irritate the skin, so may be a problem for sensitive skin. There is also a risk of severe damage to the eyes. Do not use on dry clothes, and aften washing or treating with Vanish, dry away from direct heat or sunlight.
What I do:
I actually keep both the in-wash powder and the gel at home. I add the powder to almost every wash just in case there are stains that I missed, and to get the clothes cleaner.
I find Vanish is fantastic, especially for oily stains which nothing else on earth can get rid off. It's not 100% effective on everything, but in my experience, 98% of stains come off, and those that don't can be reduced. I actually rub the gel directly onto stains, leave for about 10mins then wash. If it doesn't come off completely I will repeat the process a few times.
It is also great for grimy whites. My mum used to scrub by hand my brothers grimy dirty white school shirts, especially along the collar. Now she just rubs some Vanish on, shoves them into the machine and adds some more powder into the wash. so she swears by it!!
She has also used the Vanish White which is more like a bleac and only for whites and she says that is more effective than any other bleach. I haven;'t needed to use that yet.
Summary: The best stain remover I have found
