Vanish In-Wash Liquid
Advantages: Gets rid of stains, doesn't smell chemically, easy to use, well priced
Disadvantages: Inclusion of a measure would be useful, doesn't work as effectively when just used in-wash
As I get older I realise that when people say that women turn into their mothers it really is true. Every day I become more and more like my mum. Not that this is a bad thing, you understand, my mum is fab; she knows everything, she's wonderwoman and she's my best friend. But when I was younger and she used to get excited because it was a "good drying day" or when she triumphantly announced that she'd got that b***** grass stain out of my brothers football shorts I was left completely baffled as to why these were things to get excited about and swore to myself that I'd never be like that.
Fast forward 15-20 years and I am definitely my mum. I stand at my kitchen window cursing when it rains and I have washing to dry and I am now the proud owner of several miracle stain removing products. Despite being such a grown up it is only recently that I've resorted to special stain removal products, usually just relying on the power of my washign detergent to do the job for me. However, when hubby decided it would be a good idea to get down on his back in the drive and slide under his car to see what the problem was (turned out there was no problem, his car was just really really dirty but that's another story for another day!) in his work clothes no less, and got oil on his trousers I knew that drastic measures were needed. You might deduce from this that maybe my husband works in a garage or factory and so would have been wearing grubby clothes anyway, in which case you're giving him much more credit than he is due! No, he was wearing "office clothes" and so now had oil down his nice smart chinos.
Enter my bottle of Vanish Stain Remover In-Wash Liquid. I knew my mother-in-law used the bar version of the Vanish Stain Remover so my original hunt was for that but when I was looking for it in Tesco's this was on special offer so I opted for this instead. Until then I had no idea that there was such a vast world of stain removal out there and so really would have been spoilt for choice if I wasn't such a sucker for a special offer! This usually retails at £2.27 per litre (in Tesco at least) but, if memory serves me correctly this was reduced to £1.50 when I bought it.
The Vanish Liquid comes in a bright pink bottle which does rather stand out when it's on a shelf and still looks much like the picture shown above, although it looks like the bottle has been stretched now and is taller and thinner rather than shorter and fatter like that one. The front label tells us that it can be used to both pre-treat your clothes and/or go in the wash with them and that's about all the information provided on the front. The reverse, however, is another story and is jam-packed. It is apprently tough on staind and can be used even on delicates such as wool and silk and is also effective on low temperatures. It gives instructions for use (pour 100ml into your washing machine drawer along with detergent and start cycle immediately for every day use or for tougher stains pour 5ml directly onto the stain, leave for five minutes then follow the every day instructions), advice on using (follow washing instructions on labels, do a colour-fast check before use, don't use directly on metal fasteners) the usual safety advice about not drinking it, keeping it away from children and your eyes and what to do it you do accidentally do any of these. There is also a list of ingredients and contact details for the manufacturer.
Interestingly there is also a little picture of a white t-shirt hanging on washing line on a blue background with www.sustainable-cleaning.com on the bottom of the label. A quick internet search has revealed that this means that the company is part of a Europe-wide scheme to "promote sustainability among companies making detergents and other household and professional cleaning products...(to) help safeguard people's health and safety and protect the environment for future generations". For more information click on the website mentioned. Well done to the manufacturers of this Vanish then!
Using this Vanish Liquid is very simple and I just followed the instructions on the bottle. Well, when I say that I followed them what I mean is I hazarded a guess at how much liquid to use. The one downfall for this product (ok, one of two downfalls for this product but I'll get to the other one in due time) is that the lid doesn't also act as a measure for how much of the liquid you're supposed to use. As I don't really want to use a laundry product in my cooking measuring jugs then I ended up just having to use guess work based on the fact that the bottle supposedly contains 10 in-wash measures.
Because it was oil that I was trying to get out of my husbands trousers I knew it would be a tough one to get out so I first applied half a capful directly to the stain, left it for five minutes while I washed the dishes, then stuck them in the machine and added another 100ml (ish) to the drawer before setting it to my usual washing cycle. I still wasn't convinced that the process would work but lo and behold, when the trousers came out they were oil free, there wasn't even a slight shadow residue to reveal that there had been a stain there in the first place. One very impressed redhead78!
I have since used this on blackberry juice stains, beetroot juice stains (no, I didn't learn my lesson wearing a white jumper when harvesting intensely purple coloured fruit and veg!), blood (don't worry, it was nothing serious) and all manner of other things and this Vanis has removed them all really well. The only thing I would say (and this is the second downfall I mentioned earlier) is that it really isn't as effective if you just put it in the drawer and when I've used it in this way the stain has still been present at the end of the washing cycle. So now when I know there's a definite stain to remove I always apply some of the liquid directly to the stain first and then wash as usual and this seems to work every time.
Whilst I realise that it must be full of harsh chemicals for it to work so effectively it doesn't smell like it is, so there's nothing off-putting about using it. It smells much like a washing detergent liquid, which is much nicer than feeling like you're pouring straight bleach onto your clothes. Having said that, the first time I got it onto my hands when I was applying it direct to a stain I didn't really think anything of it but after a short while my skin did start to itch quite badly. I don't consider myself to have sensitive skin so I was surprised at that and ever since have made sure to wash my hands thoroughly after using it.
In conclusion I am very happy with this Vanish Stain Remover In-Wash Liquid and it has saved numerous items of our clothing from just being thrown away. It gets stains out effectively when applied directly to the stain and is very easy to use. Even at full price I don't think it's unreasonable as it will last for 9 washes and I don't need to use it in every wash, only when something is badly stained. As I said, the only two slight negatives are that there is no measure provided for the amounts needed and that it doesn't work as effectively when just used in a usual washing load. I would like to give it 4.5 stars but as I can't then I'll round it down to 4 taking these two very slight issues into account but I would heartily recommend this stain remover.
Summary: A very effective stain remover that I'd definitely buy again
