Vanish Prewash Spray
Advantages: removes stains even on a cold wash, easy to use
Disadvantages: none for me
I love pastel colours and that's reflected in the clothes I wear. They're all light coloured, one item in particular I'm never without. It's a baby blue coat whilst it may seem a strange idea to wear a coat all the time its made out of duvet so it's amazingly comfy to just lounge around the house in and warm enough to go out in.
The down side of this is that it collects grime like nobody's business. The colour probably doesn't help that either and it has to be washed in a cold wash so even if my detergent could get the grime out in a warmer wash it can't in a cold. Therefore a good stain remover is an essential for me. I chose Vanish quite simply because it's the brand we always have used. In fact in a recent clear out I found a bottle that was blue - not pink so it's anybody's guess how old that was!
Anyway, the packaging tells me that this works by penetrating deep into the fibres to break down the grime and grease. There is a warning on the packet that some stubborn stains may require two treatments and some stains such as rust, dried paint and permanent ink may be impossible to remove.
The instructions tell me to spray on, leave for a couple of minutes and then wash as normal. Spraying is easy, there are grooves for your fingers just below the pump and I've found these to be around the right size. The pump is also easy to squeeze being loose enough that squeezing it a lot doesn't leave you with sore hands but also firm enough that you can't operate it by mistake.
On squeezing the pump a clear coloured gel is released. The spray is fairly wide, whilst this is useful to cover a relatively wide area it does mean I get some on the floor when spraying sleeves. However I can confirm that this has not done the floor (Lino) any harm. There isn't really any particular scent, maybe a slightly 'clean' scent but nothing more.
It does say for best results to treat both sides but it's a little hard to do this with a thick coat and so one side has to do. I then put it through a cold wash as normal.
There has only ever been once that I've had to use it twice and that was to get out blood. That's not an easy stain to remove anyway so I was impressed that this came out after only two uses on a cold wash. All other stains.. General grime, sauce etc. have always come out on the first try.
The warning on the packet tells me that this is not suitable for silk, other delicate fabrics and flame proofed articles. My mind boggles at the idea of flame proofed clothing but there we are - pet dragon anyone?
Anyway, I have used this on cotton and polyester without any problems. It does tell me that this is suitable for both light clothes and bright colours so long as you don't leave it for more then 5 minutes on brightly coloured clothes. Having only used this on light coloured clothes I can't say how it works on bright colours but since it's designed to break down stains I would keep well within the allowed time and test a small patch first.
Overall this is a great product that has done what no other product that I've found so far has done successfully - get stubborn stains out in a cold wash. It is one I will be buying again and therefore one I'm happy to recommend.
Finally, whilst I realise this review has focused on cold washes this is because in my experience it is harder to get stains out with a cold wash. The results achieved are the same in a warm/hot wash.
I bought my bottle from ASDA costing £1.87 for a 500ml bottle but it is widely available online and from most, if not all, supermarkets.
Summary: a great product that has worked miracles for me
