VIAKAL - limescale spray
We don't live in an especially hard water area but we do get limescale around the ends of the taps and shower heads and also around where the tap joins the bath or sink. I also notice the shower screen getting cloudy in some areas.
I had previously bought some lime scale remover and hadn't read the instructions. When I sprayed it on the fairly new stainless steel taps I removed more than lime scale. Our taps are now a sort of mixture of stainless steel and darker looking pewter coloured shiny metal. We hadn't had our new bathroom very long before i did this and we have left them as they are because although they don't look so great they are perfectly serviceable. luckily I only tried it on the one set!
Back to the shops:
This time I carefully read the instructions on the back prior to the purchase. This was safe to use of stainless steel and glass so I was happy to put it in my trolley despite its quite high price tag of £3 for 500ml. I notice it is on sale in Tesco for £2 at the present time.
This comes in a trigger spray with a child safety nozzle that you twist on/off depending on which way you turn it.
The plastic bottle is recyclable through the scheme you have locally for plastics. I sometimes use spray bottles like these rinsed out to store mixtures like diluted bleach as the spray is great for applying lots of cleaning things but read the label in case it may cause a chemical reaction.
Rinsed out it is also good for weed killer if you mix your own but naturally not for any fertiliser or food stuffs.
The Product claims:
100% limescale removal, 100% shine
Leaves a barrier that prevents watermarks and limescale build up
Its formula respects your surfaces and helps prevent limescale return
Try again on the taps:
I was a good girl this time and read the instructions again just to make sure. I sprayed the mixture carefully onto the parts of the taps that had whitish lime scale and then left it for a few minutes. The liquid is a thin and very pale blue gel with a mild quite pleasant aroma. It certainly isn't a harsh smell. Round the base of the taps I use an old tooth brush to get right into the join. I also use the toothbrush to get in the tap handles as we had the sort with a cross on the top and it is in those corners that the lime scale lurks.
The instructions are rather basic and show them in pictures, I suppose it saves long complicated explanations. After spraying they suggest pouring a cup of water over the taps. I just used my hands to swish water over the area and a cloth.
I have to say I was mightily impressed as after the scrubbing the lime scale almost melted off, it certainly turned soft rather than being calcium like. Not only did the lime scale come off pretty easily but I was also left with lovely bright shiny taps as well. I dried off the taps using kitchen paper or an old towel and it was like a polished trophy sort of shine. They were like new again I was so pleased. It hasn't been able to repair the damage I did to the other taps in the main bathroom but it did make them lime free and shiny albeit varying colours.
I found this stuff was also excellent for cleaning the bottom of the shower screens and the removable seal that stops leaks from the bath. Once again I just sprayed it , left it and tooth brushed it then dried it and it now slides really easily with no gritty feeling and it also looks lovely and clean even in the corners.
You can use this in toilets but I used the other lime scale remover that wrecked my taps for this and will until it is used up.
I find that once I have used this it takes some little time before the lime scale builds up again because this have an ingredient to help prevent lime scale returning. Because we don't live in a really hard water area i only have to do this job every couple of months so a bottle lasts me a good long time.
Obviously this is a chemical cleaning product so needs to be kept out of reach of children.
If you have any allergies to chemicals I would suggest that you wear rubber gloves when handling this and wash your hands thoroughly after using anyway.
I always give my hands a really good wash with a nice moisturising soap then put some hand cream on after I finish my housework and it does help keep the damage from chemical minimised.
Viakal contains an acid solution, in order to dissolve the alkali lime scale so we are warned not to allow prolonged contact with the skin, as it could cause irritation.
I have also used this for cleaning the tiles and around the plugs and it is fine for plastic baths and ceramic sinks but they say it should NOT be used on enamel baths or gold plated taps.
Finally although it removes lime scale it is not a descaler for anything that prepares food such as a kettle nor should it be used to de scale washing machines or dishwashers . You need to buy specific stuff for those jobs.
Viakal and bleach should never be used at the same time or mixed as a chemical reaction could occur. This warning and other safety advice is printed on the bottle.
Would I buy this again ?
Yes it does a great job of getting rid of lime sale without harming the taps and bath and sink. It leaves them beautifully shiny and it is quite some time before I notice the lime scale building up again.
Obviously in between times I use normal bathroom cleaners but if you live in a really hard water area you may need to use it more often.
As our house has been on the market for some time I make sure before we have anyone looking around the house that I have used Viakal and made the bathrooms as clean and shiny as they can be.
Thanks for reading . This review may be posted on other sites under my same user name.
