I came across this product after I was asked if I wanted to purchase it in a Mountain Warehouse shop at the Yorkshire Outlet in Doncaster. I was purchasing a waterproof winter coat for one of my sons to wear to school. It was an add on purchase at the till, but as my own waterproof coat needed washing quite badly, then I thought why not, and impulsively made the purchase.
This is a 2 in 1 liquid detergent product, and is designed to wash your waterproof clothing as well as re-waterproof it. Washing in ordinary soap powder is a big no-no, as your coat loses the waterproof layer and eventually starts to leak. I learned this lesson the hard way with an old jacket of my husbands which let in the water at a critical point when he was caught in a downpour at work.
I purchased a 300ml bottle of this for the price of £8.99, which is actually very good value as the RRP and the price you can buy it for from amazon is £14.99.
I liked the idea of this as it is quite a simple product to use as long as you follow the care lable on your clothes you want to wash. I was elated at being able to just chuck it in the washing machine and not really worry about it.
The product works best on garments that can be tumble dried after washing. The waterproofer is activated through heat. At a push, this can be done by drying on a radiator, but it will work much better if your garment is able to be tumbled.
The bottle has a screw top lid. It was sealed inside with one of those metallic looking seals to show it had not been opened when I bought it, and to stop it leaking. Now it is open I need to keep it upright.
One adult coat (approximately 2Kg) needs to be washed in this way. Use 75ml of the liquid into the soap dispenser in the washing machine draw. Wash your coat at between 30-40 degrees following the care lable instructions. You can't use your normal soap powder and conditioner at the same time, and this bothered me as I was sure I wouldn't like the end result.
The detergent in this did a fair enough job at getting out muddy marks. It didn't touch a pen mark I have on my coat thanks to my little oiks drawing on me with the whiteboard pen they use to write their name when they arrive at school. My coat didn't look brand new, but it didn't cause the colour to fade in any way (bright pink) and it did look a lot cleaner than before the wash.
The thing I missed most was the smell you get from using powder and conditioner. This leaves no noticable smell on your coat to make you think it is clean.
This milky looking liquid is a bit pongy before your wash starts. It smells a bit rubbery or plasticky to me. Thankfully the coat didn't smell like this after.
My coat could indeed go in the tumble dryer, but only on a low heat. I was worried this would not work as well as the original waterproofing, but since I washed my coat at the start of the winter season, I have been out in all kinds of nasty weather, and my top half stays completely dry. The water runs off too well and I end up with soaking wet legs.
I think that this product is great, as I would no doubt have had to wash my coat in normal powder, and I may have tried using a spray protector, but I feel overall that this was a much easier solution. This is very multi-functioning. As well as cleaning and waterproofing, it is said to maintain breathability, minimise further dirt build up, and although I can't 100% prove those claims, I have got an extra few seasons wear out of a light coloured coat. I also have less qualms buying the boys more expensive waterproof coats knowing that I can just chuck them in the washing machine if they decide to sit in a muddy puddle in the middle of the sandpit at nursery like my youngest did earlier in the week.
A useful tool to help get the most out of waterproof clothes. My only negative is that there is no measuring cup with this. It would be easy enough to make the lid a measuring cup. It would make it a lot easier to use rather than guess at how much is a quarter of my bottle.
