Windolene Glass & Shiny Surface Wipes
Advantages: One wipe can clean a lot of glass, leaves no smears, doesn't smell awful, versatile
Disadvantages: Expensive to use on larger glass surfaces, can dry out if pack not properly sealed
Before I moved to my current home I lived in a large home which had a surfeit of mirrors. I had three large mirrored wardrobes and three bathrooms which each had large mirrors. Cleaning them was a bit of a never ending job and while I am a huge fan of Mister Muscle glass cleaner, sometimes it was easier just to keep a packet of glass cleaning wipes upstairs to do the job, and Windolene wipes became my brand of choice then.
You get 20 large wipes in a packet of wipes. Each wipe measures 30 cm x 18 cm and I find this can easily cope with large mirrors or glass surfaces. The wipes are made from a soft cotton style fibre and do stretch a little.
The wipes do have a slight scent of vinegar on them but generally the aroma you get from these is an almost clinical smell, and certainly it gives off the impression of being something of a no-nonsense product. The wipes have never irritated my skin and seem to be a gentle product to use.
You can use the wipes on most glass and shiny surfaces such as windows, glass doors, mirrors, car windows, formica, vinyl and plastic surfaces. The wipes are not suitable for plasma screens and the packaging also claims they are not suitable for laptop screens but I've used them without incident on my laptop.
When you have removed a wipe from the packet it is imperative that you ensure it is properly sealed otherwise the wipes will dry out. The seal is very effective I find but it does require a little pressure to ensure it's fully closed.
When I first started buying these they were available in Poundland but sadly those days are long gone and you can expect to pay between £1.49 and £1.99 for them now.
The Windolene wipes are easy to use and in my experience one wipe can clean a lot of glass. When I lived in my old home one wipe would easily clean three very large mirrors with some power left to deal with a TV screen.
The wipes do leave a little residue on glass when you clean with them but don't worry about this because they don't leave streaks. I currently have a glass TV stand which (like all glass furniture) is a dust trap. The Windolene wipes make light work of cleaning it however even though when I first apply them to the surfaces a white residue is clearly noticeable. Within a minute however it vanishes and the surface is gleaming.
I find they are an effective, if expensive, way to clean windows and I generally keep them just for the bathroom to deal with the mess my daughter makes by the bathroom window when cleaning her teeth. The wipes make light work of removing the toothpaste splashes she leaves behind!
One wipe will clean all the glass in my living room which includes my glass TV stand, TV screen, computer screen, some photo frames, two clocks and some glass vases, which I think is rather good going. The wipes are not particularly damp when you remove them from the packet but don't be fooled into thinking you will need more than one to clean several items - a little goes a long way! The wipes are also very effective at cleaning the plastic base my TV sits on and they work a treat on my UPVC doors too.
I wish I could say the wipes keep my glass cleaner than normal but I haven't noticed any difference between using them and using my Mister Muscle product with a cloth.
I really like how they don't have an overly powerful smell either with that clinical, slightly vinegar smell acting as a reminder you've cleaned your glass but not in an overpowering manner. The smell doesn't linger for very long either.
If you have a lot of glass to clean in your home it's probably more cost effective to use a spray glass cleaner and a cloth but these wipes are undeniably an effective and efficient product. I appreciate they are not as environmentally friendly as using a cloth and spray either but with judicious use they are worth the rather high price tag in my opinion.
My only caveat about these wipes is I do believe they work at their best if you have thoroughly dusted the surface you wish to clean before you use them. They work best at removing the dirt that is left behind the dust but are not so good at picking that top layer of grime off.
Overall I really like these wipes due to the streak free shine they give my glass and other shiny surfaces. When they cost a pound a packet I regularly used them for larger glass surfaces but due to the spike in price I can't really recommend them for jobs such as mirrored wardrobe doors, despite the effective job they do. For smaller jobs I think they are a handy standby - but shop around for the best price!
Summary: An effective glass cleaning product from Windolene - but it is expensive!
