Advantages: Reasonably priced, nicely scented and longevity value, nice design
Disadvantages: Availability of scents available, not many other downsides
Although Yankee Candle may well be famous for its large and medium candles which often appear on QVC shopping channels and the like, their premium priced fragrances are well known to be the best for fragrance, design and quality internationally. However whilst there are many consumers who are happy to burn candles in their home, there are others who can't use candles for fear of bounding pets 24 hours a day or a large family where children take the precedence. Then there are others who just don't like the thought of a burning candle.
Out of all the other different varieties available, Yankee Candle have done quite a lengthy range of alternatives, from their older "boil in the bag," large scented herb bag which was originally ideal for either adding to pot pourri, hanging in a clothing/storage cupboard or simply dropping into your vacuum cleaner to make your home smell according to the scent you chose. Unfortunately Yankee Candle has ceased production of the rather excellent sachet bag. Then came the Pot Pourri and cost optional scented oils of which can be added to the same scented Pot Pourri once the original scent has died out, a rather strange mini-plastic lamp oil freshener and later this year Yankee Candle extended their scent range with a series of plug in adaptors with corresponding fragrances, a range of dry wood stick/oil bottle fragrancers, new car air vent gel fresheners and a limited period of buying two of their famous Car Jar air fresheners which have been in existence along with the sachet bags long before many other alternative varieties were made available.
The Yankee Candle Car Jar air freshener is purposefully designed for any vehicle, similar to the Magic Tree idea although it lacks the Red, Amber, Green sequence of loose oil, the card already comes impregnated with the particular scent of your choice and comes with a piece of wire to which it can be tied or hooked onto your rear view mirror, or any other area in the car such as grab handles near the roof of the seats. Approximately measuring 15cm height by 5 to 6cm in width the Car Jar originally is supposed to be used with half of it coming out of its plastic wrappings. However in use, whenever I've hung a Car Jar air freshener card, the wrapper always falls off and the scent airs the car. Generally however I find that one Car Jar will last a month and a half depending on how it is used, or quite frankly what odours and smells the air freshener will try to combat at the same time. If for example you're constantly eating in your car, say with hot fragrant food, a Car Jar air freshener won't last that long!
At basic cost a Car Jar should cost around £1-99 and there are packs now which feature a special edition fragrance bargain of the month, so for example "Coconut Bay," and "Clean Cotton," is currently available to buy in packs of 3, carrying the promise of buying 2 and getting 1 free. At a cost of £3-99 then, this would appear to be a bargain.
However long the particular scent you choose lasts, I've had a few different ones from one of my favourite cologne-aftershave-type scents, "Midsummer Night," to "Clean Cotton," "Cinnamon," and "Sun Washed Linen." As with the candle fragrances, the Car Jar card fresheners can be very strong at first and most people recognise the brand given that it's a picture of Yankee Candle's famous "Housewarmer," jar - that is, one of their glass medium sized candles with air tight tops or fragrance once they get into the car. Certainly you should check the websites offered at the end of this review to see what scents are available. The card however is not wet so it's not likely to damage or stain surfaces.
The uses for this card however are great for many different uses. I use Car Jars to scent my clothing closets, drawers, any room which has a closed nature and no windows such as our shoe cupboard and even at school I've hung one in my classroom to banish the smells that lurk where pupils put their coats or PE kits; I've even hung one off a handle of a window behind vertical blinds in another school room so that it is discreet and doesn't attract the attention of nosey kids. When it has been hung in classrooms, kids immediately identify with it at times and say that their parents may have similar versions at home or in their parents' cars.
Of course it goes without saying that you are never far who Yankee Candle are given that the shape and picture of the medium glass jar candle looks like a 2D cut out dangling precariously from the rear view mirror. Whilst many cars seem to have these Car Jars, they have only recently been produced with a slightly smaller height, perhaps because the original ones were a little bigger, got in the way (particularly if the car air vents were on full demister and the Car Jar flaps about wildly) and looked like a bit of a blind spot in the way; the smaller size is welcome as it doesn't flap about too much or cause blind spots in view.
The smaller size however doesn't mean it loses its strength of scent or potency; I find that many of the scents are great for masking tobacco or pet smells in the car. And whilst stocks last it would appear that this is a good time to get your Yankee Candle Car Jar. Certainly at the price it would make sense to consider this item over a small "Yankee Candle Sampler," candle, which in my opinion are never quite strong enough and makes you wonder why you bothered.
So it's a thumbs up for the Car Jar air freshener; you don't need a car for consideration; unlike a Magic Tree air freshener which frankly in any home just looks plain daft. Thanks for reading. İNar2 2008
