Advantages: An inexpensive way to manually clean your carpets
Disadvantages: none
All the interior designers that we watch on the television home makeover programmes advise us that the pale coloured wool carpets are the way forward.
I have to agree with them, the pale carpets look beautiful, but functional they are not!
When we last redecorated our lounge we had a wool Berber carpet laid in a darker shade of beige. The carpet isn't really animal friendly and it certainly doesn't allow for the grandchildren visiting!
But in its defence I will say that it cleans up a treat. The first time it was shampooed I hired the machine from the dry cleaners, it was expensive and the end result wasn't exactly what I had imagined. I was shopping in Morrison's supermarket one day and noticed the 1001 carpet shampoo so decided to try it out.
The shampoo has been especially formulated to clean large areas of carpet and you can also use it on upholstery.
I had to double check the instructions to make sure that it could be used on wool carpets, but its fine, even to the point of being `Wool Approved`. If it had contained any bleaching agents then I wouldn't have attempted to clean my carpet using it
I left it until late evening to shampoo the carpet, then it would dry overnight. First of all you need to give the carpet a good vacuuming.
When you mix the shampoo use the ratio of 1 part shampoo to 6 parts of warm water and whisk the liquid until it has a foam on top. I mixed my 1001 in a washing up bowl so it gave me room to build up a good foam.
Apply the foam using a clean cloth or a sponge and then start to massage the foam into the carpet fibres. If you work from the corner of the room that is the furthest away form the door it means that you don't have to walk back onto the wet carpet.
As you shampoo a square metre or so take a clean cloth and wipe away the dirt and foam as you go along.
My carpet had a few stubborn stains where the grandchildren had spilt fruit squash, but a little extra pressure lifted the majority of the stain.
I would think that it took me over an hour on my hands and knees cleaning the carpet.
When I had completely finished I left it to dry out overnight.
The next morning it when the carpet was dry I gave it a good vacuum over, the carpet looked brighter and the `pile` had lifted where it had been scrubbed. It had a nice clean smell too.
The odd few places where I had scrubbed a little harder to remove stains were noticeable, but I thought that they would blend back in again with time.
The 1001 has a fibreshield polymer ingredient which helps carpets and upholstery stay cleaner for longer.
The overall end result was good and it was an affordable and effective way of freshening my carpet.
If you are tempted to try cleaning your carpet or three piece suite using 1001 make sure to do a tiny `test square` first to check that the carpet/fabric is colourfast.
Remember not to use too much water when you are cleaning.
This type of 1001 cant be used in cleaning machines, it is not suitable.
1001 carpet cleaner can be found in most leading supermarkets and hardware stores.
Summary: An effective and inexpensive way to clean your carpets

- 07/12/08 I prefer to use my Bissell carpet cleaner - I haven't got the patience to clean the carpet by hand! Great review x |
