Advantages: A lovely smelling air freshner
Disadvantages: can be expensive to maintain.
When I moved in with my partner I knew I'd miss my parents. When I used to walk into my parents home the place would always smell lovely. The first thing I did when I moved out was purchase an Airwick Freshmatic spray. I was torn between a plug-in and a battery operated spray but in the end decided on the battery operated air freshener mainly because electricity would be too much otherwise and I had heard about fire risks associated with a plug-in. So my mind was made up...Freshmatic Automatic Spray it was.
I was browsing the bargains at Wilkinson's and found a mulled wine scented Freshmatic spray for £3.49 and bearing in mind the unit alone can cost anything between £5.99 and £11.99 depending on where it is purchased I had to buy it. OK so mulled wine isn't really the best kind of smell during summer but the refills were rather cheap and if bought in a sale are very well priced.
Packaging
-------------
I wasn't impressed by the way they packaged the Freshmatic spray. In fact it took me a while to open it and when I finally did I cut my finger on the plastic wrapping. The plastic casing was so well sealed I really struggled to get the packaging open. It was also quite difficult to open with scissors as they would not cut the strong plastic covering.
The Unit
-----------
The unit is a rather large white tear drop shape with a blue button and green button. The unit takes AA batteries and the it is quite easy to set up and replace the refill. I have placed mine on a shelf but it does come with fittings to attach it to a wall out of the way. The unit will occasionally spray a shot of spray into the air at regular intervals. The unit does have a on/off button so that you can prevent it from spraying randomly. Our unit is on the same shelf as our phone so when I am taking on the phone I sometimes get a mouthful of spray so it can be a good idea to turn it off when its not required,. The small button on the side can also be used to give an additional spray if required...usually used when my other half farts.
Refills
---------
You can get a nice selection of refills, at the moment we have Freesia and Jasmine and this is very pleasant. It smells clean and its not too overpowering. We had the mulled wine refill with our last one and I wasn't so keen on this one although I am sure it will be better at Christmas time when the days are cold and dark.
In my last unit I had a lavender refill and I find this one a little too strong and sickly. In fact this refill tends to make me sneeze quite a bit so I prefer not to use this one.
The refills do last 4-6 weeks depending on the strength of spray e.g. if you have it on teh maximum setting the spray will not last as long, but if it is on a lower setting then the spray will go a long way and last much longer.
Battery Power
------------------
I do find that batteries are used pretty quickly, we tend to change ours every time we refill so that we can get the best out of the refill. I prefer having a battery operated air freshener instead of a mains operated one as it not only cuts down on the electricity bill but it can be positioned anywhere in the room.
There is a green flashing light which helps identify when the battery is running low or has run out which is helpful. I do also love the mechanical pump sound (psstttt) that I hear occasionally as it shows the unit is working as it should.
Conclusion
---------------
I would recommend the Airwick Freshmatic Spray if you are in need of keeping your house fresh and smelling nice.
Summary: Keep your house fresh!

- 03/12/08 When I lived in shared accomodation I bought a few of these for in the shared rooms as most of the people (men) I lived with smoked and the rooms stank of stale smoke. |

- 16/11/08 We have one of these in the conservatory and Littlest Honest Bob now stops what he's doing and sniffs the air (two sniffs each time!) whenever the unit sprays. Great evidence of classical conditioning as the sound occurs before the smell!! |
