Advantages: works extremely well, it's quick and easy
Disadvantages: smells strong, not widely available
Ajax is a brand that isn't really advertised therefore unfortunately it isn't a particularly well known brand. Within the Ajax range you can find cleaning wipes, spray, gel and scourer.
*** About the Product ***
Made in Guildford by Colgate-Palmolive (U.K) Limited, this Ajax scourer comes in two different varieties; Blue and Yellow. The one I will be reviewing is the yellow one otherwise known as Lemon Double Bleach.
With it's double bleach and disinfectant action, Ajax Lemon scourer has the power to shift really hard, deep stains in a matter of minutes. It cuts through thick grease and dirt and leaves an amazing clean finish.
*** My experience ***
To me this 510g of Ajax scourer is my little miracle worker. I have been known to have really bad stains on my kitchen worktops and under the microwave which products such as flash or mr muscle won't remove and until I found Ajax I was living a pretty unhealthy life.
It comes in quite a big, unattractive tub which basically looks like it comes from the 60's or 70's. Packaging wise it could do with an upgrade. It has a metal top which has seven holes in it and they are revealed by pulling off the bit of cellotape stuff that's stuck over the top preventing the powder from spilling out.
It is so easy to apply which is the best thing. You simply sprinkle some of the powder onto the stain you want removed and for best results leave a minute or two (I always leave it around 2 minutes just to be on the safe side). Then using a damp sponge/cloth simply wipe the powder away. You should notice that the stain has gone but you may need to scrub it a little while you wipe it away. It shouldn't take much though but if on the rare occasion it hasn't lifted the stain, simply repeat and leave on for up to 5 minutes. It doesn't tell you any directions of use on the tub which is a slight let down because people might not know what to do with it and there aren't any websites I've seen that offer any advice/knowledge on the product.
Smell wise it's quite strong because it is made with double bleach which basically means it's a strong cleaning product. If you want something a little less harsh it recommends on the tub that you use the Ajax cream. I can't really smell the lemon that much, more the bleach but it's not an over powerful smell like normal bleach (that really hurts my throat) so it isn't too bad. The smell doesn't last that long either. I've found after around an hour the smell has gone completely which is better than it staying there all day!
As I said I use it on my kitchen worktops. It does say you can also use it on toilets, tiles, cookers and other hard household surfaces. My fiance used it on the cooker the other day and it really shifted stains on the door. I wouldn't recommend using it on the inside of a cooker mind you because it might be hard to wash off and it's flammable so if you leave any of the powder in there and turn the oven on it could cause an accident.
I've found that the results from this are amazing. I used it on stains that had been under our microwave for maybe a year before we moved in and after leaving it on a few minutes the worktop was looking like new. I usually always use mr muscle orange spray which is really good but it didn't remove the stains half as much as this did. I can't stress enough how clean it makes everything. I also love the fact that it has double bleach meaning it will kill any living germs on the worktops. It really does make me feel a lot safer and cleaner!
I find that this lasts me around a month because I tend to use it instead of my normal mr muscle sometimes, especially in the sink where mucky water is going down every day. So you don't always have to use it for really hard stains you can use it whenever you feel the need. Obviously if you don't use it that often it will last you longer.
*** Price and Availability ***
The price I find is extremely good. It cost me around 80 pence from Asda so for a months worth of cleaning product that's a real bargain for me! Unfortunately the down side is that there isn't many places to get it from. I used to always get it in from Tesco but they stopped selling it for some reason or another so I now have to go further to buy this. It is worth it though even if you aren't a keen asda fan. Failing that I think I've seen it in places such as Wilkinsons or Savers. Just look around and you're bound to find it somewhere. Come to think of it, it was recommended on 'How Clean is your House' a few months back so it must be available in all parts of the country.
All in all I love this product and couldn't clean my worktops/sink without it. I hope they never stop selling it and I recommend everyone to try it at least once and see if you don't get hooked. Results wise it gets an 11 out of 10 from me.
