Ariel Excel Gel
Advantages: Convenient to use, fresh smelling laundry gel
Ariel Excel Gel is a colour detergent specifically designed to work well at temperatures as low as 15'C but can also be used with higher water temperatures as well. One standard sized bottle (which is actually 667ml) is enough for 18 washes.
The bottles are a nice size and shape and have a stripe of clear plastic on the side so you can see how much gel is still left inside which is a really useful feature. The cap is at the bottom of the bottle and flips open easily. Just like with a shower gel, the liquid inside is of a thick consistency so it will not leak or drip out unless the bottle is squeezed. The cap for measuring out the gel comes attached to the top corner of the bottle and once detached and used in the wash, it can be clipped back on so that it doesn't get lost.
As described on the back of the bottle, the cap can either be filled the whole way to the top for a single wash with tough stains or in hard water areas. For lighter washes or in soft water areas, slightly less gel is needed. So unlike with the liquitabs, you are in control of how much detergent you want to use. The cap with the gel in it is simply placed on top of the clothes in the washing machine and can be retrieved later after the wash.
I have the version with the purple coloured label and the gel has a nice generic fresh soapy smell which is pleasant but nothing particularly special. The gel itself is dark green which is a little surprising as I expected it to be purple to match the label but this doesn't really make any difference.
A couple more important things to note are that it says on the back of the bottle it is not suitable for use on wool or silk and the cap cannot be put in the tumble dryer. So if you have a two in one washer-dryer it has to be removed before the drying cycle starts.
I have to confess that I didn't actually buy this - I found a whole bottle of it in the cupboard under my sink as it must have been left behind by a previous tenant! However it looks like it is currently on offer at sainsburys.co.uk for £3.
Summary: Easier than powder and takes up less room in the cupboard!
