Advantages: Cleans, removes odour, long lasting bubbles

Disadvantages: None

With so many weird and wonderful products out there on the market for us consumers it is all too easy to dismiss something as simple as a washing up liquid, after all you only need it to clean the dishes not much important about that is there? Yet all our supermarkets have shelves and shelves full of different brands making wonderful promises about how lovely our dishes will be after using them, how clean, how fresh, how pleasant smelling.............you may not think there's a lot of difference between one brand and the next and imply grab whatever catches your eye first, I used to play about with different brands, choosing whichever looked nicest or smelled most pleasant to me that week, until now, having recently chosen Asda Lavender & Tea tree washing up liquid and being won over by such a simple, everyday product.

Asda Lavender & Tea Tree is part of Asdas premium washing up range, naturally only available from Asda it costs 84p for a 500ml bottle. The liquid is a pale purple colour and is of a medium consistency, showing some quality to the liquid that many other cheaper versions lack. Strangely the lavender is not the dominant smell rather the tea tree stands out above the lavender, a pleasant clean smell with the floral lavender hints lingering in the background. Other than the obvious promise of cleaning your dishes the range make 3 promises, that it is antibacterial, odour eliminating and provides a long lasting bubble.

Starting a bowl of water for my dishes I usually like to squirt the liquid into the stream of hot water causing the bubbles to start developing straight away, there are quite a lot of bubbles produced by even a tiny squirt of the liquid and they are white and shiny, multiplying atop your water until the bowl is full. The water and liquid cuts through the dirt on your dishes quickly, leaving them clean looking and fresh smelling, glasses look shining and crystal clear with no residue left behind. I like to leave dishes or pans with more stubborn stains to soak in the water for a while after I've done the other dishes but in no time the liquid cuts through the dirt making the dishes easy to clean, requiring less scrubbing and elbow grease, the only occasion when I've found the need for a more powerful product is when I've let the potatoes boil dry in the pan leaving that impossible back layer, such events as dried on pasta sauces and stuck on batter are no problem after a few minutes soaking in this washing up liquid .

While it's difficult to tell whether the product is truly antibacterial it is a reassuring feature in today's hygiene obsessed society and I do like the idea, as a parent of young children, that the dishes will be left as clean and hygienic as possible, I'm even one of those people who leaves the dishes to dry naturally for fear of germs on the tea towels. My dishes always look and smell clean after using the liquid and it is a pleasure to use. The liquid really does seem to cut out odours, my children are quite fond of fish pie and hubby likes spicy sausage casserole and tomato pasta dishes, such foods can often leave a lingering smell and can make the water seem dirty and stagnant but the liquid somehow destroys these smells and even on the odd occasion I've left the dishes in the water and forgot about them, distracted by another job, I've not returned to any unpleasant dirty dish smells.

The odour eliminating properties demonstrate themselves to you and while it's pretty hard to test the antibacterial promise I did decide to see if the long lasting bubbles promise was accurate, I've never noticed that the bubbles had dispersed while doing the dishes, but then that's not something you really pay that much attention to once the dishes are done and you throw the water away, however we decided one evening to leave the water until the next morning, you can imagine my surprise to see the bubbles till sat happily atop the water shining in the morning sun. I know the bubbles are usually more for visual effect then any actual cleaning purpose but they still look nice and seem to make washing the dishes more fun.

How long a bottle will last will depend on how often you use it and in what quantity, we usually use a bottle a month, with several daily uses on the dishes of a family of 4, for 84p I'd say that's pretty good value, the liquid achieves all the same things a more expensive brand does as well as leaving your hands feeling pleasant after use, which is quite nice as there's nothing worse than pungent dish pan hands. If you're an Asda shopper and not tried this variety I'd highly recommend giving it a go.

Summary: A great own brand washing up liquid.
