Advantages: Dishes and glassware come out really clean

Disadvantages: Stains cutlery

My never ending quest to save money and try out all the value, supermarket brand products that I can lay my grubby little fingers on continued recently with a purchase of Asda Smart Price Dishwasher Tablets.

These tablets are mindbogglingly cheaper than every other available brand of dishwasher tablets (aside from other supermarket own brands). They cost just £1.72 for 30 tablets. The other brands available at Asda are:

Ecover Tablets: £4.59 for 25
Finish Tablets: £4.50 for 30
Fairy Active Bursts: £6.98 for 30

You can see from this list that Smart Price tablets are in a completely different league, price-wise. I have worked out that if you use a packet of these a month, putting the dishwasher on once a day as many families do, you would save around £35 a year compared to using Finish or Asda 5 in 1. This is a decent saving in my book.

The tablets come in a green and white cardboard box. The packaging is not very attractive but I keep my dishwasher tablets hidden away in the cupboard under the sink, so nobody sees them anyway!

Each tablet is individually sealed in a plastic cover which is easy to rip open. The tablets are blue and white and slightly crumbly, but I usually manage to transfer them intact into the dishwasher. After putting them in, you just close the compartment and turn on the dishwasher, simple.

But what are the results like? Well, in general I have found the tablets really effective. I usually just put the dishwasher on a quick economy wash and even on this setting the dishes, mugs and glasses come out really clean. Baked on food comes off easily. The patterns on mugs haven't faded and I don't have any ugly white marks on the glassware.

The only problem is that I have found my cutlery doesn't respond very well to the tablets. A lot of it has become tinged in an unattractive brown or green colour. This isn't a big problem for me as a lot of the time I eat alone and am not trying to impress anyone! Plus, most of my cutlery is cheap stuff from Argos or Poundland! However, if you have posh cutlery, you might want to avoid these tablets.

However, if you don't mind a bit of staining on your cutlery, these tablets are a good way to cut down your monthly spend.

Summary: A good way for me to save a few pennies

The cutlery thing happens to me even with the more expensive tablets. I think it is universal. Great review.
