Advantages: cheap, effective

Disadvantages: sometimes need to use two

My pans are all stainless steel and whenever anything gets burnt onto the bottom it's a nightmare to get them clean. I've tried those sponges with a green scouring layer but they often aren't strong enough to get rid of most burnt on stuff, so instead I use these which are essentially a cheaper version of Brillo pads.

The pads come in a plastic tray, which is wrapped in a green and white plastic wrap. It's very basic packaging, but functional, and I was pleased that these came in a plastic tray, as I once bought some from Wilkinsons which came in just a plastic packet, and pink powder leaked all over the place from one of the corners!

The pads are simply square wire wool pads which have a sort of dried pink soap in them. They are square in shape, and not as neat looking as some of the more expensive brands, as they are slightly irregular in shape, but at the end of the day, I don't think that's too important, as they only end up in the bin anyway. When you dampen them and rub onto whichever item you wish to clean, they will begin to lather up, creating a soap that will clean, whilst the wire wool will essentially scratch away any dried on food or burnt bits that may be left on your pan.

I find these to be very effective and just as good as the more expensive brands at cleaning. I mainly use them for cleaning pans, but they are also good at getting rid of burnt on foods from my pyrex casserole dish and the heavy ceramic pot that goes inside my slow cooker.

Of course being wire wool there are some surfaces you can't use them on - anything with a non-stick coating, 'self cleaning oven linings', or 'delicate surfaces' whatever they may be. I think generally it's a case of using your common sense here.

The pads are great and don't fall apart as some other cheap ones I've bought do, and at maximum I've only ever needed two at one time, and that's to clean really tough stains. Obviously the pads can only be used once each as once they have become wet, they will start to rust.

The pads cost just 37p for a pack of 15. Compared to the ones I was previously buying which cost 40p for 10 from Wilkinson's, this is fantastic value, and when you consider the leading brand, Brillo cost 99p for 10, that is quite a saving.

So in conclusion, I'm very impressed with these. With cleaning products especially, I have never seen the point in spending more than you have to, so these are great.

Summary: A great buy
