Any regular readers of my reviews will know that for some time now I have been making a huge effort to reduce the cost of our weekly grocery shopping, mainly because we are saving like mad for our wedding, but also because I am unable to work due to my ill health and therefore we have a limited income.

With this in mind, I have been actively trying out supermarket-own branded items, in a bit to save some pennies! Many of these have proven to be a worthwhile switch from our regular brands, but others have been less successful.

One cheaper-than-usual product that I tried out for the first time recently was the 'Asda Smartprice' cling film. I chose this brand instead of the brand I would normally buy, and by doing so I managed to save around 40 pence or so.

The Smartprice cling film currently costs around 40 pence from all Asda supermarkets, which is very reasonable in my opinion, given that the roll is 45m long.

The Asda Smartprice cling film is provided in the usual plain white packaging that is immediately recognisable as belonging to the Smartprice range. A very plain and uninspiring mostly-white coloured packaging on a product does by no means entice me to buy it over any other, but I personally am not particularly swayed one way or another by pretty packaging, much preferring instead to base my opinion on the product itself.

My partner regularly uses cling film wrap (or tin foil, depending on what is to hand at the time) to wrap up some bread or sandwiches to take for his lunch. I do this for him about half of the time, and the other half of the time he does it himself.

The filling of the sandwiches can at times be quite messy - tuna mayonnaise for example - and therefore it is quite important that the sandwiches are wrapped sufficiently to stop the filling from escaping and making a huge mess of my other half's 'work bag'.

In addition, I of course want the cling film to keep whatever it is 'wrapping' nice and fresh until it is required.

I found that for these two points, the Asda Smartprice cling film did exactly what it was supposed to. I also used it at a recent family lunch, and I found that my leftovers were kept fresh until the following day, which is of course the purpose of the stuff! Everything that I had wrapped with the cling film had retained its moisture - where applicable of course - and the potato salad and coleslaw that I had wrapped up had not dried out or become inedible in any way.

All in all I would say that I was impressed enough to buy it again. I found it to be a good enough substitute to the brand that I usually buy to change my mind and buy the Asda Smartprice offering in future.

The one down side is that I did not find it to be as thick as my usual brand, and this meant that on a couple of occasions I had to 'double wrap' my foodstuffs because the cling film had not wrapped it sufficiently. Even so though, by wrapping the occasional item twice over I am still saving money in the long run, and am happy overall with the quality and efficiency of this cling film.

Four star product in my opinion, and I would recommend giving it a try.

Summary: A four star wrapper! :-)
