Advantages: cheap, absorbant
Disadvantages: no design
I ordered my shopping online earlier a couple of weeks ago, mainly because I wanted some Christmas gifts and couldn't be bothered to lug them back from ASDA which is a little further away from my house than I would like to travel! To make my order up to the minimum £25, I ordered loads of cleaning stuff, including a pack of the Smartprice kitchen roll.
I'm not sure I would have bought this ordinarily - I do tend to go for the cheapest option when it comes to cleaning stuff, but I've used other supermarket's value brands of kitchen roll, and found them to be too thin, making them useless. The reason I bought this though, was that we were given some cleaning stuff at work (our office is vile), which included a pack of this kitchen roll, and I remember thinking that it was surprisingly thick for a budget brand.
The kitchen rolls come in a pack of four, and are merely wrapped in a plain cellophane wrapper with some basic product information printed on it. The rolls, if I'm honest looked a bit squashed and misshapen, and the plastic they were wrapped in wasn't sealed very neatly either. The rolls are plain white and the paper is dimpled - no fancy patterns or cartoon characters here.
Like I mentioned, the kitchen roll is surprisingly thick. I was previously using Lotus Thirst Pockets, and I would say that this one is thicker, and feels a bit stiffer if you know what I mean. The paper isn't as soft as the Thirst Pockets one, but then I don't suppose softness is a hugely important quality in kitchen roll.
I find that the kitchen roll is very absorbent. I don't want to keep referring back to the Thirst Pockets one, but I had been quite disappointed with it as it was quite thin and didn't mop up spillages very effectively. In fact I had bought it on a BOGOF offer, and instead of opening the second pack, I decided to try this one next, in the hope it would be better.
I managed to spill half a jar of Bolognese sauce down the kitchen units and all over the floor yesterday, and although in hindsight I maybe should have used a cloth, I mopped it up with this kitchen roll and it was fine. It doesn't tear apart or disintegrate at the mere sight of a liquid, and I didn't have to use a huge amount to mop up which was really a very large amount of sauce!
A pack of four of these kitchen rolls cost just 83p for a pack of four. To me, this is very good value, especially if you consider that the regular ASDA own brand cost 98p for just two and if you want to go for premium brands like Lotus or Bounty you can expect to pay over £1.60 for two.
In conclusion, I have been very impressed with these, and although I don't go to ASDA regularly as it's a bit too far away, I will definitely add some to my next online order, and would highly recommend them.
Summary: Great for the price
