Advantages: price - not bad quality - hardly any packaging
Disadvantages: the two plys come apart easily
When it comes to buying toilet tissue I have only ever bought supermarket own brands and have always been satisfied with the quality of these. On a recent economy drive I decided to try the Asda Smart Price toilet rolls and see how they compared to the normal Asda own brand.
I shop online through Asda direct and I can get the smart price toilet rolls in packs of four priced at 43p or packs of twelve priced at £1.26. Asda's normal toilet rolls are priced at £1.82 for four rolls so you make a real saving.
The toilet rolls are only available in white and come in a plastic wrapping with the asda smart price white and green printing on them. It is estimated that you get 200 sheets per roll which is slightly less than the 220 sheets that you get on a normal roll but I think the price difference more than makes up for this. The toilet roll is two ply which I think is pretty standard even for more expensive brands.
When using the tissue in the bathroom I have no cause for complaint at all and wouldn't say the tissue was uncomfortable to use although my husband has commented on the lack of softness with the new toilet paper. I also use the toilet roll for wiping noses as I have three young children so colds are very common in our house. I find the tissue is perfectly acceptable for this and haven't noticed that the tissue is particularly scratchy or unkind to sore noses.
My only complaints with this toilet tissue are that when you first start a new roll it can be quite tricky to separate the end. It seems to be stuck to the roll very well and you can end up with the two plys coming apart and unwinding separately. This is also a problem sometimes once you get into the roll a little way as the two plys don't seem to be put together very well and do come apart easily.
On the whole I am very pleased with this low cost toilet roll and despite the ply issues I don't see myself switching back even to the normal supermarket own brands. I find it does the job it is intended for very well and is not uncomfortable or scratchy in any way as I had worried about before buying it.
Summary: I won't be changing back to more expensive brands

- 19/08/09 When the two layer separate, flip the top layer over the top of the roll and then they'll line up again. |
