Advantages: easy to use, no need to scrub, great results with a little effort
Disadvantages: bleach/swimming-pool smell
I've tried all sorts of products to make our shower look good as it has mildew & mould around the tiles yet nothing really seemed to shift it. I tried Flash, Mr Muscle, bleach & other lesser known products & although it looked a little more clean I wasn't happy.
One of our local shops was closing down so I stocked up on a few of my regular cleaners when I spotted Astonish Mould & Mildew Remover. The regular price is around £1.50 for 500g but this was on offer for £1 for 750ml so it was well worth grabbing I thought - if it didn't work in the shower then I could use it on my patio set.
It comes in a sturdy plastic bottle as shown in the picture & has a well-designed & effective trigger action dispenser & an easy grip neck. The spray is slightly foaming & has a smell of bleach though much less strong than a pure bleach product.
As the pump dispenser is well designed it's wasy to squirt the product exactly where you need it & you don't need to scrub - just leave for 3-4 minutes then wipe (or in my case rub) with a damp cloth & rinse. The full directions plus cautions & ingredients are clearly listed on the reverse label on the bottle.
To be honest after having used so many different products to remove the nasty black mildew, I wasn't expecting much in the the way of results but it really did work. The mould, mildew & other gunge was almost all removed the frst time I used it - it needs another 'good going over' so hopefully, after writing this review,it will give me the incentive to finish it off!
It did take a bit of elbow grease but, considering the state of the shower cubicle, this was to be expected. It was defintitely worth the effort though as we had considered having to buy a new shower - no need now.
On the label it's telling me the product can also be used on window frames bathroom tiles, shower curatins & concrete. It cannot be used on rubber (so avoid rubber seals in bathrooms damaged paintwork, unglazed ceramic tiles, aluminium, copper, brass, fabrics etc - it's well worth taking a couple of minutes to read the label before purchase in case it's not right for the job you need doing.
The ingredients include less than 5% chlorine-based bleaching agents, anionic surfacants & sodium hydroxide so when I've used it I've popped on a pair of rubber gloves.
If you have mildew on tiles or shower/bath surround I'd really recommend giving this a try - the only bad thing is the 'swimming-pool' smell which lingers for a while - but then you can't have evrything can you?!
Summary: well worth a try if mildew is a problem
