Advantages: Convenience

Disadvantages: Cost, lack of power

18 months ago I bought a 12V Black and Decker cordless hammer drill/screwdriver. This cost £90 and came with a smart 1 hour charger. With this charger, it detects when the battery is charged and swtiches to a trickle current, which saves the battery from being damaged by over charging. I recently bought a similar electric drill for £30. This doesn't have the hammer action, so it won't be any good for masonry, and the charger is a dumb one that takes 3 hours and will destroy the battery if you leave it on for too long. However, the battery fits with the other drill and for that alone its probably worth having. One thing I've noticed with the new drill is that doesn't have a 2 speed gearbox like my old drill. This means that it?s a bit slow for drilling when you want a high speed and a bit fast for using as a screwdriver.

Since I've owned these drills, I've hardly used my old corded drill at all. Its much nice to not have to worry about the flex with young kids around. There are times when you _need_ a corded drill - to drill into concrete, but its pretty rare.
