Advantages: Good at spills, strong when wet

Disadvantages: A bit more expensive and fat rolls might not suit your holders

I've certainly found that, since having a baby, the contents of my shopping trolley have changed. One product that I've found I can't be without that I hardly ever considered before is kitchen paper. Previously I'd just buy whatever was the cheapest paper and a roll would last for months - in fact, I don't think I could say what I used it for. Now, however, I seem to use paper like it's going out of fashion! Yes, I know it's not necessarily that environmentally friendly but it's convenient and that counts for a lot at the moment, particularly if you've a crying child to see to!

My paper of choice is Bounty. I've found it to be far superior to most other papers and a great all-rounder.

Bounty is ideal for soaking up spills and, as advertised, really does stay strong when wet. This means that you can actually wring in out and soak up more liquid per sheet of paper than you can with other papers. I decided to try "Thirst Pockets" which are advertised at being good at soaking up spills and, in comparison to Bounty they simply don't compete. The Thirst Pockets paper is stiffer and just doesn't soak up nearly as much liquid as Bounty and you certainly can't wring out the Thirst Pocket's paper and use it again.

Liquid spills are one thing but I've also found Bounty great for soaking up thicker products. Yoghurt and purees are all dealt with well where other papers merely smear the offending spill around the surface. It's also particularly good at soaking up oily substances.

Bounty is also soft enough to use to wipe hands and faces. It can be used dry but I've found that it works well if slightly dampened and, because it's still strong when wet you don't get any annoying little bits falling off and making even more of a mess. This is particularly handy if baby is in the highchair and I don't have a clean flannel to hand!

I've also used Bounty in cooking - no, it doesn't taste that good but it's great for wrapping potatoes in if cooking jacket potatoes in the microwave or for putting on top of a couple of slices of bacon if cooking in the microwave. Of course care should be taken if using in this manner and only use it if the product you are cooking is wet or you could have a fire on your hands!

Bounty is advertised as being strong enough to cope with cleaning tasks. I rarely use it for this purpose although when I have done so it's fared well with minimal pilling. It can be used to gently scrub spills from carpets and clothes for example.

An unexpected find was that it's quite good for finishing off windows and cutlery for a smear free shine after cleaning.

Bounty is available in a few forms and there are plain and printed papers available. Like many products the "big" rolls seem to be popular although I find that these are often too big for my paper holder.

It's not the most environmentally friendly way of cleaning up mess but it's fuss free and hygienic that, for me, is more important.

Summary: A premium kitchen paper
