UPDATE 14TH MAY 2002

You may have already read my scathing attack on the 30-litre Brabantia pedal bin. Well after suffering it for far too long (see previous op for details), I've finally thrown it over for a brand new 50-litre Brabantia touch-lid bin.

It is brushed steel (matt), and has a black lid which when lightly touched, springs open to reveal a wide-opening, and stays open till you snap it shut. Losing the pedal function (which was the way to open the 30-litre version) doesn't seem to be an inconvenience at all - in fact I find the touch-lid easier to use, and you can leave it open while scraping plates and only close it once you've finished cleaning up after a meal.

All in all, it is WONDERFUL - it's currently my favourite gadget and has totally changed my opinion on Brabantia kitchen bins. It has a large capacity which is ideal for a family kitchen, and even when completely full, the custom-made Brabantia bags glide out easily. It isn't just larger than the 30-litre bin, it is also better designed, and looks gorgeous. You can see pictures on the Brabantia web-site www.brabantia.com/indexframe.cfm

I shopped around - Heals sell it for £82, but Robert Dyas delivered it to me for £73 including delivery cost www.robertdyas.co.uk. John Lewis also do it for a reasonable price, but I particularly wanted the matt steel (not the shiny chrome-look), and only Robert Dyas seemed to do that colour. Brabantia don't sell direct.

So that's it, I'm now a big fan of Brabantia bins again! (well some of them anyway)

.............................................
I own a 30-litre Brabantia pedal bin - looks great, but doesn't do the job. If it gets full (which let's face it is its purpose), I end up wrestling to get the bag out. The Brabantia bags fit perfectly but are rather thin, and often tear when you pull them out. The design of the bin is tall and sleek, and the r
ubbish simply doesn't want to come out when it's full! It's possible that the 50 litre bin which is wider does a better job. So, once again risking style over substance, I've bought (mail order from Robert Dyas at £73), the larger 50 litre version. I'm hoping that this will make all difference, and that the bag will come out more easily when full. Call me a sucker, but I've fallen for the design in a big way, and this time have gone for a brushed steel (matt) colour. I'll let you know how I get on with it.

Wow, I'm blown away. All you people out there reading my humble opinion about a rubbish bin, and some of you asking for more. Well, here goes. Brabantia bins are available at most dept stores in London - I bought mine in John Lewis, who sell it for around £10 cheaper than many other stores. Call me a sucker, but I've just traded up my 30 litre, partially unsuccessful purchase, for a larger 50 litre model. I know, I know, I'm risking style over substance, but I'm hoping that the larger capacity will mean that it's easier to empty. The larger style also has a "touch-open" top which looks like it might be interesting. I'll keep you posted, and when it arrives (I bought it mail-order through Robert Dyas at a good price), I'll write a report on it.
