Advantages: Clears blockages very well
Disadvantages: May potentially perish rubber washer if used regularly
Buster bathroom drain cleaner is one of today's must haves, especially if you have long haired people living in your household. The one thing they really cannot blame me for in my house is the blocking up of the plug hole in the bath with hair lol.
We have all been there, taking a shower and realising you are standing in a shallow pool of water. When the bath does not drain quicker than the shower you know you need help.
There are a variety of products to perform such as task. Buster bathroom drain cleaner, manufactured by Challs International Ltd, is one such product. They can be found in amongst the cleaning products in most supermarkets. Buster comes in a black bottle with a blue lid and costs around £1.99 for a 300ml bottle.
What is it?
Buster bathroom drain cleaner is a thick gel which can sink through standing water. It contains ingredients which are specially formulated to dissolve hair and soap and thus clears your bathroom plumbing to allow free flowing water to drain away.
Ingredients include:
INGREDIENT NAME CONTENTS
Sodium Hydroxide 2 - 4.8%
Sodium Hypochlorite
% Cl active 1- 2.5%
Sodium Silicate 1- 4.5%
Dimethylamine Oxide < 1%
As expected with such a product, this can have hazardous affects. The gel is corrosive and can burn your skin if it comes in contact. It will also give off a toxic gas if mixed with acids so extreme caution is required when using this product.
Recommended first aid measures for this product are:
Ingestion: Wash out mouth with water, give plenty of water to drink. Do not induce vomiting. Obtain medical attention immediately.
Eye: Irrigate the eye thoroughly with water for at least 10 minutes holding the eyelid apart. Obtain medical attention.
Skin: Immediately wash with plenty of water, preferably under a shower. If affected area is large enough to warrant this. Remove contaminated clothing and thoroughly clean and dry before re-use. Obtain medical attention if irritation persists.
Inhalation: Remove from exposure. Rest and keep warm. Obtain medical attention in the event of breathing problems.
Recommended handling and storage:
Handling: Avoid contact on skin or eyes.
Storage: Store in a cool dry area avoiding acids.
How to use.
Open the bottle and slowly but carefully pour the entire contents of the bottle down the offending plug hole. Minimum recommended waiting time is 15 minutes, however I tend to use this just before going to bed so the product has a good few hours to 'work its magic' before the bath is used again. Once it has had time to clear the blockage, run hot water into the bath for a few minutes to flush it through.
Does it actually work?
I must say I am most impressed with this product. Yes it definitely works in fact it works very well. I have used this product 3 times now over a period of a couple of years. Each time I have left the drain cleaner in the plughole over night so it has had a good few hours to clear the blockage. The next morning, the drain is unblocked and water freely drains away as expected. I wouldn't like to say if it can clear a blockage in 15 minutes, and given the fact that you are spending a couple of pounds to literally pour down your drain I would not like to try it and find it hasn't done the trick. So for the matter of leaving it for a few hours!!
The manufacturer actually recommends regular use of this product, as it claims prevention is better than cure. If used regularly, the blockage won't build up in the first place. However in saying that, they would want you to buy regularly. But be warned, a plumber friend of mine advised me to use this sparingly, over use can cause the rubber washers / rings within the pipe work to perish and hence you'll end up with leaking pipes which will require a plumber to fix. Overall though, it is one of the best products I have used to clearing blockage in the bathroom caused by hair.
Summary: Excellent product, does exactly what it claims
