Advantages: Softer fabrics and easier to iron clothes, saves you time

Disadvantages: It is not cheap, no information about how many washes are in a bottle

Some weeks ago I noticed that my husband's shirts were much more difficult to iron, more creases and a dry feel to the fabric, requiring to spend a lot of time for each of them. So I thought probably limescale in the washing machine.

I live in a very hard water area so I was already using a water softener in every wash. I used to buy Tesco's or Sainsbury's own brand, mainly because of the price, but as it seemed they were not that effective I decided to try Calgon Gel.

Sainsbury's had it on offer for £3.61, usually it retails for £4.25, for a 750 ml bottle.

The blue gel, actually the consistency is more liquid than a gel but quite viscous, comes in a clear recyclable bottle with a white measuring cap. It has a strong smell but a pleasant one.

The front label says it is recommended by Whirlpool, Bosch, Candy, Siemens, AEG and Hoover.
In the back label, you find instructions on the dosage, one cap for medium and hard water and one cap and two thirds for very hard water. Here I need to say that there is nowhere to be seen how many washes there are in a bottle which I think it is very important if you wanna compare best value for money.

Also it says you will get better cleaned garments, less risk of rough feeling laundry, saving on detergent dosage and lower electricity consumption.

So I used the recommended dosage to wash the shirts and after air drying them I was quite surprised that they were much easier to iron.
It took me half of the time that I spent last time and also much less use of the ironing aid spray. The creases were easy to get rid off and the fabric felt really soft.

And if you are worried about the planet, Calgon Gel is produced on carbon neutral factories and they claim they are planting more than two million trees through their "Trees for Change" project.

Summing it up, I will continue to use Calgon Gel as it proved to be a great time saver. It is not a cheap product but it does its job very well.

Summary: It helps me with my ironing

It is expensive but I could do to try some as I live in a hard water area too. Our towels always feel so rough!
