I love winter evenings and really enjoy a cosy evening in with just candlelight. I am also a lover of buying as ethically as I can, and for a couple of years now I have enjoyed the beautiful candles made by a company called Candles Naturally, who make my favourite candle- the coconut shell.
These candles are sold by Ethical Superstore who is one of my favourite online retailers. They source products which have been made with sustainability in mind. www.ethicalsuperstore.com
The coconut shell candle is made from soy wax, which is a made from a soya bean crop grown in Thailand which is renewed annually. It is presented beautifully in a lovely box, made from recycled paper which has been printed with vegetable ink, and the candle itself not only is made inside the shell of a coconut, but also sits in a stand also made from a coconut shell. The candle itself is 8.5cm high by 8.5cms diameter. I am very pleased with the photograph Dooyoo has provided, as it is accurate and shows the product clearly.
I love these so much that almost every one I know has received one of these from me as a present, and without exception everyone has asked me where I bought them from, as they wanted to purchase more in the future.
From time to time the fragrances they sell do differ slightly, as some are very popular and sell out quickly, but in general there are several fragrances -mandarin, vanilla, coconut, mango, cantaloupe, banana, fig and my all time favourite- frangipani.
The frangipani is a lovely rich creamy white and the fragrance is floral and delightful, and it soon scents the room with a delicate aroma. Unlike some scented candles which are little more than novelties these candles really do have gorgeous aromas, as they use natural essential oils in their production.
They retail for £9.99 but they do have 40 hours of burning time, so for me that is at least 10 evenings of pleasure from one candle. At the end of their life I use them for bird feeders, as they make lovely bowls in which to place nuts and treats for my Great Tits and Robins who visit my bird table daily.
Candles Naturally who make these were formed in 2007 when Kevin Clarke set up the company with the intention of helping farmers and workers overseas. His intention is to operate as ethically as possible, and to this end he is building a new factory which will be entirely solar powered. If you would like to visit his website it is at www.candlesnaturally.co.uk.
I love these candles and even took one on holiday with me when I went to the Maldives last summer. The sun goes down at 6pm there as it is near the equator, so it is a delight to sit under the stars by candlelight. In fact the birds who visit my garden each day are currently having their breakfast from this one, so it really has been a multi purpose product.
Aesthetically these look very attractive and the fragrances are gorgeous. According to the manufacturer these are better for your health and for the environment, as they are pure and contain no paraffin as some candles do.
If you do decide to order through Ethical Superstore remember to use a cash-back site such as Quidco or Topcashback as all offer 10% cash-back on purchases with them.
They will also float so you can use them in water. They are also very suitable if you are having a meal, and any Eastern food will be complimented by the addition of this candle on the table. For meals I choose a less fragrant candle, the coconut version is particularly appropriate for this.
Delightful candles made with sustainability in mind-perfect for bringing light into the darkest of winter evenings.
