I am always on the lookout for new cleaning products to keep my home smelling fresh. I was particularly having issues with my outdoor wheelie bins as having two children in nappies it would get a bit smelly especially during the summer months.
I came across Bin Buddy in my local Wilkinsons and retails at around £1.50 for 18 applications. I'm sure I have had more use out of it than that though, I suppose it depends how much you use and how often.
There is a flip top lid which conceals two holes. Inside the tub is a fragrant smelling powder. I always use the Citrus scent as I find this the cleanest smelling one. You just need to sprinkle a small amount of powder into your bin to keep it smelling fresh. I tend to do it every couple of days, although the tub says to use it every time you use your bin, I think that's a bit extreme. In wheelie bins it is fine as when the bin men empty your bin the powder will be tipped away in it but if you are using it in a standard kitchen bin I would suggest using it in the bin liner rather than the actual bin itself. If you pour it into the bin the powder will become caked up on the bottom and you'll end up having to scrape it off every week.
The citrus smell is nice and strong. Very crisp and fresh. Apart from neutralising bad odours, this powder also kills germs.
I love to try new products that keep our home smelling good, especially in the summer months when the increased temperature can make the bins and drains not smell their freshest! It's only recently that I have become aware of the Bin Buddy range and I have become a big fan since I first started using them.
This particular product is aimed specifically at wheelie bins. I used to be of the opinion that cleaning or taking care of your wheelie bin is a waste of time and money as its outside of your house, however with councils facing budget cuts and regular strikes affecting our bin collection services (Brighton springs to mind!) I think it has become quite important to take care of your wheelie bin and avoid those awful smells that hit you when you open the lid.
The bin buddy also works to repel and kill insects and flies. The bin buddy comes in two scents (berry blast and citrus), both pleasant (although rather artificial smelling), however my personal preference is the Berry Blast scent. The natural insecticide is non harmful to the environment, us and pets, so you do not need to worry about any harmful chemicals coming into contact with you or your family.
The container that this product comes in is brilliant. Shaped like a mini wheelie bin, complete with wheels, the product is certainly eye catching. It holds around 15 applications inside the tub, and when you only need to use this once a week it will last a long time for only a small investment of around £4 - £5 dependent on where you buy it from.
Dependant on how you use your wheelie bin will be dependent on how often you need to use this product. I use quite strong bin bags and don't put that much food waste inside my bin, so I find that using this product once a week after my bin has been emptied will provide sufficient fragrance and insecticide until it is emptied again. To use, you simply shake the corse powder into the bin and leave it to work its magic!
I would definitely recommend this product and will continue to use it and others within the range. For a small price you can avoid those nasty smells and put your rubbish out with pride!
Bin Buddy/The Range

Bin Buddy is the number one choice for bin care and is a new and innovative range of products designed to both kill and repel flies and other insects to keep your bin bags smelling great in either Berry Blast or Citrus. Also in the range are Bin Buddy Wipe, Kitchen Bin Buddy and Bin Buddy Disinfectant Spray. Bin Buddy not only kills and repels insects including flies, wasps, ants, cockroaches, mosquitoes, etc but also leaves your bin smelling great. Bin Buddy contains a natural insecticide, which will break down naturally in the environment without harming you, your pets or plants. Each mini wheelie bin container contains up to 15 applications which is great value for money. Bin Buddy is a powder and a regular sprinkle inside your bins and bin bags keeps them smelling fresh and free from insects. Simply shake some into your bin whenever you use it. Bin Buddy is suitable for all wheelie bins and dustbins and is available in two fragrances including Berry Blast and Citrus. The powder comes in a plastic container which is made to look like a wheelie bin. Half of the lid on the top of the container flips up to reveal 2 sections which have small holes in which the powder dispenses. I purchased the Berry Blast fragrance so the container was pink in colour. On the front of the product it states that it kills flies fast and is your bins best friend. On one side of the container there is some information that needs to be read before using the product; this includes how to use it and how to avoid risks when using the product.

I looked in my local Sainsbury's store and I couldn't find this product so I purchased it online from eBay for approximately £4.00. You can also buy this from Amazon as well; how-ever prices may vary.
Using Bin Buddy

I purchased a container of this for intended use for the bin at work. The bin at work is a large wheelie bin and as the council are very unreliable in coming to collect it weekly, sometimes the bags can sit in the bin for up to 1 week before being emptied, of course this means that the bin can often smell and attract unwanted attention from insects and other nasty critters. I ensured that I read all of the information on the product before using it and following the instructions I sprinkled some of the powder into the bottom of the bin. The powder sprinkled out of the container very easily without having to shake it too hard. The product is more like small grains rather than a powder and it has the look of sand rather than an actual powder. As soon as I sprinkled the product into the bottom of the bin I could smell the berry scent which was quite strong but smelt, really pleasant and actually quite nice. Everytime I went to put something in the bin the smell of the bin was fresh and fruity and the smell of banana skins and other food was now covered up by this pleasant berry smell. As the bin has a closed lid anyway, we don't tend to get too many flies in there which is good. Every week the bin gets emptied I always sprinkle a little more of the product into the bin to keep it smelling fresh and to keep any other insects or critters away. I have also sprinkled a small amount of this into the kitchen bin at work as food often gets put in here and again the powder leaves a lovely, fruity smell to the bin and masks any smells of left over food or banana skins.

I have only used the bin buddy in the bin at work but would definitely consider using it for the bin at home a it really does freshen the bin and make it smell so much fresher and cleaner. The berry smell to this particular bin buddy is a lot stronger than I imagined, how-ever it's a nice smell and isn't overpowering or smell too fake. I would definitely purchase this product again and would also try the Citrus Bin Buddy as well. This is a fantastic product for helping to freshen up your bin and to keep insects and other bugs away. As the bin at work is quite deep I can't really put any disinfectant liquid mixed with water in the bin as I wouldn't be able to empty it again when draining the liquid solution. As I sprinkle the product in my bin each week, the product will easily last me up to 15 weeks which is good. I think the product is good value for money and I highly recommend it. The only down side to this product is that it doesn't have a child safety lid, so you need to ensure that this is kept well out of the reach of small children.
