Cif Cream White
Advantages: Versatile and effective, does not irritate hands.
Disadvantages: Be careful on soft plastic surfaces and avoid using on fabrics.
Sometimes you get so familiar with a product that you lose sight of how good it is! I have been using Cif cream cleaner at home and professionally, where I care for boats, for so many years that I thought it merited a review.
Made by Unilever, this all purpose cleaner comes in a variety of sizes from 500ml to a whopping 2litres but the 500ml size is my favourite as it is easy to handle and does not wear you out as does the large size, if you are having to lift it repeatedly or run around a boat all day with your bucket full of cleaning goodies. It comes in a white plastic container whose sides are slightly flattened to make it easy to grip and to squeeze the last bits out accompanied by a vigorous shake. This size is also ideal for chucking across to your work mate or sliding along a fibre glass deck. The upper part of the bottle is curved and it is topped by a bright green click up top which fastens very securely. You should, (and I don't), clean the top of the bottle after use as if there is a build up of the product around the small exit hole, the top will not close properly and might leak.
On the front is the green, red and white Cif logo and on mine is a picture of a shiny sink, a trainer and a childs bicycle. This strange assortment of objects is to show, as it claims, that the cream micro particles, or, as mine is in Spanish, "microparticulas", which leave what ever you are cleaning, as good as new and to be honest, they are not far wrong. On the reverse it enforces this by saying that you can clean lots of thing besides your bathroom and kitchen with this versatile cleaner and to apply with a damp sponge or cloth and then rinse or wipe with a clean damp cloth.
The cream itself is a bit runny so watch out you don't get too much on your cloth, white in colour it has a nice fresh smell that is not at all strong, neither does it irritate my hands and sometimes have used this cleaner for hours on end with no ill effects at all,
Apart from the kitchen and the bathroom where it leaves the sink, bath and taps sparkling,I use it on stainless steel hand rails and fittings where it will make short work of light rust. It is great on PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride) cushions that have grease or suntan cream marks on them.Semi rigid dinghies clean up really well with Cif as do fenders which tend to get all kinds of marks on them. In the home all manner of things clean up well with Cif , from the stapler to the telephone, the mouse (compute, not the squeaky type!), and the plastic light switch fittings to name a few. It also works really well on ceramic cooker tops and is cheaper than some of the dedicated hob cleaners and is good on hard surfaces like tiles, ceramics and glass.
Things to avoid.
It is my experience that, although it is very versatile, it is better not to use on any type of soft plastic or makralon as it can scratch it. The same goes for high gloss fibre glass or varnish work, too much elbow grease and you will get a dull patch and a black look from the Captain and Owner. Donīt use on fabrics either as the bleach content will take out the colour, my work jeans have many pale patches on them, and donīt let it fall over onto a carpet, unless it is highly patterned and no one will notice!
A great versatile cleaner, used correctly it will be a good helper for all sorts of work and rightly earns its place as the most popular brand of cleaner of this type. I have tried own brand versions and although a little cheaper, they have never been as effective as Cif and so have always returned to my trusted old favourite.
5stars from me.
The 500ml sells for around 2.40pounds and is readily available at supermarkets and hardware stores.
