Advantages: Makes your taps shiny
Disadvantages: doesn't do the job it states, expensive and irritant to the skin
I must admit that when it comes to cleaning products I don't tend to pay over the odds for them. The truth is I often feel that they are not that effective in general and just make your bathroom and kitchen etc smell nice and don't do much else. I am quite old fashioned when it comes to cleaning and like good old bleach, vinegar and a good bit of elbow grease!
I really don't know which swayed me to purchase Cillit Bang power and grimed cleaner? It somehow just ended up in my basket on one of my trips to my local Tesco's, here is what I thought.
I think we can all remember the Cillit Bang adverts with Barry Scott, the adverts are very tacky and to me seem very American. In these adverts the well-known catchphrase is 'bang and the dirt is gone!' but is it really?
The fist thing that you notice is the over the top advertising on the bottle, the bottle is purple with bright orange advertising. You may say its OTT but it does honestly does draw your attention to the product; well it did in my case. You can buy different versions of Cillit Bang, these include:
Power spray (the one I purchased)
Power degreaser
Stain plus drain bleach
Grease and floor citrus
When I grabbed the bottle and glanced down at the price I was quite shocked to say the least. The 750ml bottle that I grabbed will set you back £3.19, which in my eyes is quite pricey. All the same I was eager to try it and see if Barry Scott was right?
When I got home I was eager to try it, so I rushed straight to the bathroom. The instructions quote:
One squirt for light cleaning
2-3 for medium cleaning
4-5 for hard cleaning, which is sprayed directly onto the surface and can be left for up to 30 minutes but no longer.
When I sprayed it on I was expecting something amazing, which at first this is what I got. I can say that it gave a brilliant clean and shine to my bathtub and sink, and my taps shined more than they ever have. Didn't have to bust my back scrubbing and to be honest made my chore of cleaning the bathroom quite light hearted. Off I went quite satisfied and thought no more.
The next day when I went to get in the bath I noticed a white powdery substance around the bath, the only thing I can put this down to is the Cillit Bang that I'd used to clean the bath the previous day. So I spent 5 minutes before getting in the bath rinsing it off.
I did give it the benefit of the doubt and decided to pursue with it especially as it cost more than I would normally pay. My sink in the kitchen tends to get a lot of lime scale on and loses its shine so I grabbed for my bottle of Cillit Bang. I sprayed it on, left for 5 minutes and rinsed with water. Again the result was perfection and it looked almost new and shiny. Again I was a bit sucked in to this gimmicky cleaning product. When I next went to my kitchen sink it almost looked worse than before I'd cleaned it. It left some dark marks to the sink, which I couldn't remove, even when scrubbed. It was almost like it has scrubbed the surface off of it. This made me very unsatisfied with the product, which in my eyes hadn't done the job it, had claimed too.
From what I had seen of the product I was very unimpressed to say the least, it did make my taps very shiny and look like new but to be honest that was as far as it went.
On the back of the bottle it does state that the product is an irritant, I strongly advise anyone using the product to take note of this. I myself hate to use rubber gloves whilst cleaning as I feel that I'm not cleaning properly, this was a big mistake! The next day after using it I had a rash all over my hands, and it itched beyond belief. After a couple of days it did go down but I can tell you that it did teach me a lesson. It does go to show you that the ingredients are strong, I never wear rubber gloves and this was the first time that my skin had had this reaction
Overall, I would say give Cillit Bang a miss, it is over priced, obviously strong and really doesn't in my opinion do the job it is meant too! So to end it Barry Scott I'm afraid I think you are wrong.
Summary: I'm sorry Barry Scott you are wrong!

- 17/10/09 As you say the advert is so dreadful that that in itself would put me off buying the product...Ken |

- 12/10/09 I was disappointed with this and it's not worth the money. |

- 09/10/09 It did make my bath shine, but I found I could not breath too good after I used it. I used the rest recently on rust stains outside on my path and cleaning my PVC frames. It worked a treat. It is very expensive stuff, but I really thinks it's bad for us. |
