Advantages: smells nice, softens
Disadvantages: expensive, doesn't make ironing easier
Ironing is the crappiest of jobs. It's repetitive, it's mind-numbingly boring, you might burn yourself and you'll probably end up with backache. And often it's hard. Some creases just won't shift, even with the help of fabric sprays or water. Then, if you don't immediately put your ironed clothes on hangers, they crease up again within minutes. I avoid ironing as much as possible, and seize upon any product that claims to make it easier. Comfort Plus Easy Iron is a fabric conditioner like any other, except it has an added ingredient which is supposed to help get those creases out with less time and effort. There are several products like this one around, but Comfort was the first on the market. It comes in a rich blue plastic bottle and costs around £3 or 2 litres. Not cheap, but it's often on special offer in the big supermarkets. To use, measure required amount - there's a guide on the bottle - in the upturned cap and put into your washing machine (or sink if you're hand washing). First, Comfort Easy Iron gives your clothes a pleasant smell. It's not as strong a smell as you get with many other fabric conditioners, which I found disappointing, but it is nice. Neither masculine or feminine, it is just fresh and clean. Second, Comfort Easy Iron softens your clothes, an does it quite well. As with all fabric conditioners, though, it's not too good on your towels as it does make them nice and soft but at the same time decreases their absorbency considerably. But the real test comes when you get down to the dreaded ironing. And I have to say that after using Comfort Easy Iron several times I do not find that it makes any significant difference. I still hate ironing just as much, and it still takes me as long as ever and can be as difficult as ever. Also, my nephew is highly allergic to his clothes if I've used this on them, and I myself have notice
d the odd itch in places where the fabric makes a lot of contact with my skin. I don't know if this is because of the perfume or because of particular chemicals in the product, but I would warn anyone with sensitive skin that this can happen. All in all I'm not impressed and will go back to my nicer smelling, considerably cheaper and equally effective brand next time I do a shop.

- 07/12/02 Excellent op which made me smile. I avoid even wearing anything that will need ironing when washed. :-) I had wondered at this stuff, though. |
