Comfort Vaporesse Original
Advantages: Smells nice whilst you're ironing.
Disadvantages: Doesn't live up to it's claims of easier ironing, scent doesn't last long, packaging has changed
My mum, bless her, brings us a "grocery" box every time she comes to visit full of things like tinned tomatoes, shower gel, coffee, washing powder etc. All the essentials that can be quite costly when all bought together. She jokes that whenever they're on buy one get one free she stocks up and gives us all the "free" ones, so it's not actually costing her anything. I love my mum! But, for some reason, she seems to regard this ironing water by Comfort as an essential, although I have to admit, it would never occur to me to buy it myself.
Whilst I wouldn't actually buy it, I do use it when she's stocked me up as it claims to make ironing easier, give long-lasting fragrance and care for your iron. Now, who, with four bottles of this stood in the cupboard (I think she thinks I iron a lot more than I do!) wouldn't use it, given those ambitious claims?
The Vaporesse comes in a one litre clear bottle so you can easily see the liquid inside. The label on the front is quite attractive with a picture of an iron in a field full of blue poppies and the magic words "easier ironing". It's a good job that the bottle is clear as Comfort seem to be on a cost-saving drive at the moment. There's no traditional back label on this bottle. Oh no, all the information you'd expect to find on there is actually on the reverse of the front label, meaning you have to read the warnings "keep away from children" and "do not drink" (really??? do they really need to put this on? does nobody have any common sense these days?!) through the actual bottle, which would be a lot easier if the type was actually black, but for some reason it's in a pale grey, so this isn't the easiest thing to do.
Another example of the cost-cutting is the lid. Previously the bottle came with a screw top which revealed a sturdy, chunky easy-pour spout, making it very easy to pour this water into your iron. The packaging has recently changed however, so now there is a much smaller screw top lid which comes off to reveal a normal opening, like a bottle of pop. No more easy pouring for this ironer.
To use the ironing water is very simple - even someone daft enough to drink the stuff should be able to use it! You just pour it into your iron instead of normal water, close the stopper again and off you go. This was much easier when it had the afore-mentioned spout, but is now a slightly longer process as I first have to decant the water into the weird long-spouted jug thing that came with my iron and then pour it from that into my iron.
Using Vaporesse is meant to make it easier to get creases out of clothes and it's also meant to make ironing a much more fragrant activity, leaving your clothes smelling fresher for longer. So does it live up to it's claims? In a word...no! On the one hand, yes, it does smell nice whilst you're actually ironing, but when you've finished and put the clothes away I have never noticed any lingering scent coming from the clothes, and anyway, I actually prefer the smell of fabric softener and find this gives much longer lasting fragrance than this water.
I have also failed to notice that using this water makes it easier to iron or get creases out more quickly. I haven't done a strict time test, but a pile of ironing takes just as long to get through when using this special ironing water as when using normal tap water and I have to be honest and say neither have I noticed a difference in the getting rid of creases department either.
I can't comment on the statement that it cares for your irong by protecting it from limescale a I don't know where limescale would accumulate on an iron! I haven't noticed any limescale on my iron, but whether this is down to the Vaporesse or not I really can't confirm.
This Comfort Vaporesse is available from supermarkets and many smaller stores in a variety of fragrances, although I always use the "original" version, which has a pleasant enough scent but nothing special...a mix of freshness with a hint of backgound florals. As I said, I would never buy this myself so have had to look the price up and it's currently selling at Tesco for £1.27 or 2 for £2.00. With the cost of washing powder and fabric softener I already think doing the laundry is an expensive enough part of the household chores without adding this on top of it and, even though a bottle does usually last me for a good 5 or 6 washing loads, there is no way I would pay this myself. Yes it does smell nice when you're actually using it, but I really don't think it makes any difference to the time taken to do my ironing nor does it make it easier, so for me it is a bit of a waste really.
Maybe I just don't have high enough standards when it comes to these things because I know plenty of people that swear by this, and judging by the other reviews on here that includes a lot of Dooyooer's, but I only use this because it is bought for me...in fact, having written this review and really thought about it I think I may even tell my mum to save her money (or spend it on stocking me up on Cadbury's instead!) because I find this to be a totally superfluous product.
From me, Comfort Vaporesse will only be getting 2 stars. It might have been given 3 had they not meddled with the packaging, but the fact that I don't find it lives up to expectations coupled with the fact they've actually made it harder to use means it is not an essential for me.
Summary: I find this ironing water to be a waste of money and prefer the fragrance of fabric conditioner
