My husband would say that I'm obsessed with candles, and I guess that he's probably right. I always like to have candles lit up in the house every evening, and I go through vast quantities of them. I especially like using scented candles and tealights to fragrance the room. However I am a bit of a skinflint, and I don't normally spend too much on my scented candles. I tend to go through so many that I really can't justify spending a lot on them, if I did I'd probably need to take out a second mortgage!
I do however always tend to receive expensive scented candles as gifts from friends and family, these always make a really nice and welcome gift as they are something that I would never buy for myself, and they are always very thankfully received. One of the gifts that I received for my birthday last month was this Cowshed Knackered Cow Relaxing Room Candle. I've just quickly googled the candle to get the price for the purpose of the review, and Boots sell this for £28.00.
The candle comes in packaged in a lovely sturdy Cowshed gift box, which then has a purple grosgrain ribbon trim around the box. The candle itself is contained in a thick and heavy opaque white glass jar, the jar then has white flowers and the brand name 'Cowshed' printed on the outside. I'm going to reuse the glass jar when the candle has burnt out either for a tealight, or maybe for a votive candle. The glass jar is really pretty, and a change from the plain glass jars that most scented candles normally come in. The candle itself is white, and it states that it has a burn time of 60 hours. I would say that is probably accurate as I've been burning this for around an hour each evening for the past month, and the candle has burned down about halfway now. So 60 hours does seem about right.
The candle states that it is a herbaceous blend that helps you slow down and unwind with essential oils of lavender and eucalyptus. Lavender restores harmony whilst eucalyptus clarifies the mind.
This smells absolutely gorgeous when I'm burning it, I can definitely smell the both the lavender and eucalyptus in this, the lavender more so I think though. Because the lavender seems to be the dominant scent in the candle I find it to be a very relaxing fragrance. I burn this in our bedroom, and I typically burn it for an hour each evening before I go to bed. I find that it's a really relaxing fragrance which helps me to wind down and to fall asleep. I have it burning whilst I'm reading in bed, or generally just pottering around for a hour before I go to to sleep. I think that it's a fragrance that's really well suited to burning in a bedroom.
Our bedroom is really large, and this candle easily fragrances the whole room. It even manages to subtly fragrance the landing as well if I have the bedroom door open. The fragrance from the candle lingers for a couple of hours after the candle has been extinguished, if I get back up for anything, when I come back into the bedroom I can still catch the fragrance lingering on in the bedroom.
The candle is burning down evenly, which is always a concern with the expensive candles, you don't want to end up with lots of unburnt wax around the edges when the candle was so expensive as it feels like a waste of money. However this one is burning evenly so far, at half way down, and I don't have any reason to suspect that it won't continue to burn evenly.
I would recommend this, it would make a lovely gift for someone, but I do think that £28.00 is rather expensive though hence the 4 stars rather than 5 stars.

How does it work? Aromatherapy is a natural way to feel better, more alert or more relaxed. As scents are inhaled, they trigger the part of our brains that controls our moods and memories. When this area is stimulated it releases endorphins into the blood which make us feel happier. The ingredients in this candle will achieve this in a number of different ways.
Chamomile is one of the most commonly used oils in aromatherapy. It calms the mind and relieves tension in times of emotional stress giving you the opportunity to forget about your problems, at least for a while. It encourages feelings of peace and calmness allowing you to finally relax. Its aroma is fresh, fruity and sweet.
Rosemary has an earthy smell. It has a rejuvenating and stimulating effect to give you some much needed energy. It has even been found to enhance your memory and to give you a clearer mind. By simulating your nervous system is enables you to concentrate better and helps to alleviate the feelings of fatigue and depression.
Lavender is one of the best known aromatherapy oils having been used for over 2000 years and the most loved. It helps to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. It also helps to enhance your overall mood and decrease feeling of anger and frustration, leaving you feeling less agitated. Lavender helps to restore your inner harmony.
Eucalyptus helps to relieve mental exhaustion. It has a cooling and refreshing effect leading to a better clarity of mind. It is stimulating and removes feelings of tension leaving you feeling mentally alert and refreshed.
The candle is not cheap and will cost you around £25 for 235 grams. You may be able to find it for a cheaper price if you have the time or inclination to shop around. It can be found online on a variety of websites or you could nip to one of the Cowshed Spas and have an extra treat while your there!
If you like the scent of this product then also available in the Knackered Cow range is a relaxing bath and massage oil, body lotion and shower gel.
If it's the candle that you are more a fan of then other equally playfully named candles are available. You could try Lazy Cow which is a soothing candle with a blend of chamomile and jasmine or Grumpy Cow which is an uplifting candle with a blend of citrus fragrances.
All in all, this is a great candle made with no horrible chemicals that will leave you feeling relaxed and more peaceful. It fills the room with the fragrance almost instantly and the scent lingers for a while after the candle has been blown out. If you've got the money to spare, this is well worth buying. If it's out of your price range, then put it on your Christmas list!
I love walking into a pleasantly fragranced room. I've tried a wide range of room air fresheners, including sensor sprays, plug-ins, gels, aerosols and oil burners, but my favourite way to scent a room is definitely candles. Not only do they release a lingering fragrance, but they also emit a warm, comforting glow.
A while ago I was treated to a full body massage. It was heavenly. I relaxed in a warm room and had all the strains and stresses that accompany life as a working mum of five kneaded from tense, shortened muscles that I'd long forgotten I had. The massage itself was wonderfully relaxing (after the initial pulling and pushing!) but what added to my enjoyment was the background pipe music, the soft lighting and, most importantly, the gorgeous aroma in the room.
A short time after my massage I paid a visit to my local TKmaxx (hardly a relaxing store!) and whilst perusing the cosmetic counters I came across this candle. Initially I was drawn by the name 'Knackered Cow'. Hmmm, knackered certainly described me, but I'm not too sure about the 'cow'! The candle was presented in a light cream strong cardboard box, tied with a wide lilac ribbon. On untying the ribbon and lifting the flip up lid I was instantly engulfed in the fragrance of eucalyptus and taken back to my massage. I had to have this candle!! The candle is also scented with lavender, but the eucalyptus is definitely the top note. Good job really because lavender reminds me of old ladies and I'm not ready for my purple felt hat just yet.
Having fallen in love with the candle I checked the price. Aaaaaagh, even with the TKmaxx price reduction it was £12.99 (I've since checked on line and the recommended price at cowshedonline.com for this 235g candle is a whopping £28). I put the candle down and left disappointed.
Oh, but daughters are wonderful things!!
Biggest HonestBob girlie (aged 16 with a weekly paper round) snuck into town on the bus the following week and bought the candle for my birthday (yes, I gave her the required squeeze and mummy kiss).
The candle is a very light cream colour, set in a white heavy-bottomed glass. It's simply beautiful. I stored mine on the mantle piece in it's box for a week before I actually lit it as I enjoyed just lifting the lid and sniffing the gorgeous eucalyptus fragrance. Eventually temptation took over and I removed the candle from its box, positioned it centre stage in front of the mirror and lit it. So far I have lit it 3 times for 3 hours on each occasion (the box says it will burn for 30 hours and I'm certain it will do so). The wick is burning evenly, unlike many cheap scented candles I have used. Whilst in the room with the candle the fragrance gently scents the room. It is not overwhelming and I was happy to be in an enclosed room with the candle burning. When you leave the room and return to it, the fragrance fills your nostrils and is simply delightful. The room is not filled with the choking fragrance produced by airfresheners. The scent is gentle and evenly distributed.
I feel really indulgent when I light this candle and it takes me straight back to the wonderful feeling of relaxation I had during and after my massage.
