Advantages: The wick burns slowly and does not get drowned in the melted wax

Disadvantages: Very expensive at the recommended retail price

I love walking into a pleasantly fragranced room. I've tried a wide range of room air fresheners, including sensor sprays, plug-ins, gels, aerosols and oil burners, but my favourite way to scent a room is definitely candles. Not only do they release a lingering fragrance, but they also emit a warm, comforting glow.

A while ago I was treated to a full body massage. It was heavenly. I relaxed in a warm room and had all the strains and stresses that accompany life as a working mum of five kneaded from tense, shortened muscles that I'd long forgotten I had. The massage itself was wonderfully relaxing (after the initial pulling and pushing!) but what added to my enjoyment was the background pipe music, the soft lighting and, most importantly, the gorgeous aroma in the room.

A short time after my massage I paid a visit to my local TKmaxx (hardly a relaxing store!) and whilst perusing the cosmetic counters I came across this candle. Initially I was drawn by the name 'Knackered Cow'. Hmmm, knackered certainly described me, but I'm not too sure about the 'cow'! The candle was presented in a light cream strong cardboard box, tied with a wide lilac ribbon. On untying the ribbon and lifting the flip up lid I was instantly engulfed in the fragrance of eucalyptus and taken back to my massage. I had to have this candle!! The candle is also scented with lavender, but the eucalyptus is definitely the top note. Good job really because lavender reminds me of old ladies and I'm not ready for my purple felt hat just yet.

Having fallen in love with the candle I checked the price. Aaaaaagh, even with the TKmaxx price reduction it was £12.99 (I've since checked on line and the recommended price at cowshedonline.com for this 235g candle is a whopping £28). I put the candle down and left disappointed.

Oh, but daughters are wonderful things!!

Biggest HonestBob girlie (aged 16 with a weekly paper round) snuck into town on the bus the following week and bought the candle for my birthday (yes, I gave her the required squeeze and mummy kiss).

The candle is a very light cream colour, set in a white heavy-bottomed glass. It's simply beautiful. I stored mine on the mantle piece in it's box for a week before I actually lit it as I enjoyed just lifting the lid and sniffing the gorgeous eucalyptus fragrance. Eventually temptation took over and I removed the candle from its box, positioned it centre stage in front of the mirror and lit it. So far I have lit it 3 times for 3 hours on each occasion (the box says it will burn for 30 hours and I'm certain it will do so). The wick is burning evenly, unlike many cheap scented candles I have used. Whilst in the room with the candle the fragrance gently scents the room. It is not overwhelming and I was happy to be in an enclosed room with the candle burning. When you leave the room and return to it, the fragrance fills your nostrils and is simply delightful. The room is not filled with the choking fragrance produced by airfresheners. The scent is gentle and evenly distributed.

I feel really indulgent when I light this candle and it takes me straight back to the wonderful feeling of relaxation I had during and after my massage.

Summary: A luxury that you can indulge in a little at a time
