Advantages: Good coverage, easy to apply and easy cleanup
Disadvantages: More expensive than 'own make' brands
I have recently finished paining one of our garden fences with Cuprinol Timber Care Shed and Fence Treatment. A 9 litre tub cost just over £8 from our local B&Q. The colour I chose was Rich Oak and although the fence had not been treated in at least 8 years, painting the fence was not the chore I had expected it to be. The product is quite viscous which I had not anticipated, since the only things I have ever used previously are preservative and creosote and my first thoughts were that it wouldn’t go far, but it did! The product has the appearance and smell of typical household emulsion paint. Do not be put off by the colour of the wet paint – it is several shades lighter than the finished colour – quite a handy feature if you’re repainting or applying a second coat. Cleaning up is easy – brushes are simply rinsed under the tap. The product won’t harm your plants according to the manufacturers – something I may comment on in a few weeks time since some of our hostas inevitably got covered as their leaves are right up against the fence. I used a brush specially made for fence treatments – lots of fine hairs designed to hold the maximum amount of paint yet minimizing splashes – I thought it worked quite well and would recommend you spend an extra £4 on one as it makes the job that much easier. As yet I obviously can’t comment on the manufacturers claim that the colour will last six times longer than others but hey, look out for an opinion in a few years time!!!
