Advantages: Good glossy deep finish

Disadvantages: Time consuming

I have hardwood window and door frames so every year I suffer the ritual of sanding and staining them. Over about five years, I think I have perfected the Cuprinol technique. I would have changed to another wood stain but I could not guarantee a stain match with the rest of the interior wood as well. Bummer.

This is the ritual I go through once a year:

Sand down EVERY surface almost to bare wood with an orbital sander removing ANY old lose material.

Wipe down the whole frame with white spirit to remove ABSOLUTELY ALL TRACES of any dust or dirt

Leave the white spirit to evaporate then apply the stain with a soft brush evenly over the whole frame in one coat.

Leave to dry, rub down any rough patches and wipe over again and restain. Apply at least three coats letting each coat almost dry before applying the next.

The problem with Cuprinol is you MUST get a dust free surface and a good first coat or it will just peel off in 3 months. The finish you get is wonderful and well worth the fuss but it is hard work!
