I am quite happy buying Tesco's own make and do often use their dishwasher tablets unless the popular brands are on a good offer.

Tesco have started having a shelf with discount brands, at first I thought it strange to see biscuits , sauce, bleach, washing products and dishwasher tablets all mixed together, but it gives you a chance to pick them up quickly and hide them under your premium range foods if you don't want people to know you're trying to buy cheaply!

I did this with Daisy classic dishwasher tablets 5 in 1 action. It's a nice bright blue box with part of a white and yellow Daisy flower, some shiny cutlery and the name DAISY in red letters. Printed on the box in yellow with a red £ sign, and a pair of scissors cutting it in half, is a label that says "Discount Brands" at Tesco. I think they could be a bit more discreet!

*What are they like?*

I bought by box before Christmas and there are 40 x 20gram tablets , they look like a lot of other dishwasher tablets and are wrapped in clear cellophane with arrows printed on it to for you to tear open. I have found some quite difficult to tear whilst others tear easily. There is a thin layer of yellow on the base and then a deeper layer of green compressed powder, with a little green topping that is rougher. When I ripped open the covering I could smell the lemon, but must admit I haven't smelled it after the wash cycle. I'm pleased to say no little pearls as these can be a problem fitting into my dispenser!

*Did it work?*

I have tried various washing programmes as my main eco wash cycle reaching 50C takes over 2 hours, the quick wash I tend to use only if I am in a hurry as I don't find the dishes dry as well, this happens whatever the tablet used! The results have been good, curry stained plates came out perfect, rice stuck on forks was removed, baked custard on ramekins disappeared, casserole dishes came clean, although the burned on deposits from previous times was still there and I know I have to soak these in something stronger and take a Brillo pad to clean. My glasses all sparkled and tea and coffee stains disappeared. I was really pleased with my purchase.

I don't put my saucepans into the dishwasher, they are a special non-stick and wash really easily, so I prefer to do by hand leaving more room for dishes etc.

*Any more Information?*

On the box it says to remove food scraps and rinse heavily soiled items before loading, I always do that, but I know a man who doesn't rinse and it still cleaned the plates! Care should be taken to avoid skin contact, and not to crush or break the tablets. A good point here was that the tablets were whole, I have had more expensive boxes with broken tablets, perhaps a problem in the shop. Some items aren't suitable for dishwashers so care must be taken.


*OH NO!*

I have 3 tablets left and I just read the information on the box! Typical me! They recommend not using for programmes lower than 50C, but to use a powder, so perhaps that is why my washing dishes weren't as dry! So it will be the 50C or intensive 70C for the last few washes!


*Cost?*

Currently £3.49 for 40 tablets, less than 9pence each. Tesco's own make costs about 15pence each and other brands can be 20 -25 pence, so Daisy is a wee marvel and has cut my cost of washing the dishes by half.

Summary: Discount brand dishwasher tablets
