Advantages: Removes virtually all stains.
Disadvantages: Needs to be used in a well ventilated area or will catch the back of your throat.
Until recently I had a range of those little yellow bottles which profess to rid various stains. You know the ones, one removes grease and oil, another curry sauce, another ball pen and so on. Well my utility room was getting a little cluttered and as the bottles started to run out, I thought about checking out alternatives. While shopping in Sainsbury's, I came across De-Solv-it. The aerosol can is about 17 centimetres high and cost £1.45. It says on the can that it "virtually removes anything" and included a list from grease, tar and paint to blood, grass and chewing gum. Now I've been paying around £2.00 each for those little bottles and so I decided to give De-Solv-It a try.
~~~ Putting it to the test ~~~
The first time I used it I tried it on my husband's shirts. He wears a double cuff and the folds always attract dirt that I have never been able to fully remove despite using "Vanish" block soap as pre wash. He has a habit of getting ink stains on them too, usually by placing pens in his shirt pocket. Applying the solution was easy. Keeping the can as upright as possible, I sprayed on to the cuffs and shirt pockets and placed straight into the washing machine. I have to say, the results were amazing and both pen and dirt were completely removed.
Although the stain remover works best on new stains and is best applied as soon as possible, I decided to root out some of my clothes that I hadn't worn because I couldn't get the stains out. A favourite top with a stubborn curry stain and a white skirt with a grass mark (no comments please!) were my next task. After applying the solution both were as good as new. I also had a couple of white towels, one stained with waterproof mascara and the other with blood from a nosebleed I had while in the shower. I had grabbed the first thing available and made a right mess of it. Despite soaking immediately in crystal white powder, the remnants of the blood remained and the mascara virtually untouched. Although I had to use De-Solv-It a little more liberally, the results were incredible.
As well as machine washing, I have tried this in a hand wash. A silk top with make up stains is now back for use in my wardrobe.
~~~ Value for money ~~~
The canister, which contains 100 ml, lasts for ages. The first one I bought I used on a backlog of clothes. For most of the time, I have only given one small squirt on the area concerned. So far I have used it effectively on stains caused by: -
Oil
Paint
Ink (both biro and felt tip)
Make up
Coffee
Curry
Blood
Grass
It also says that it works on: -
Shoe polish
Crayon
Chewing gum
Sticky labels
Wine
Tar and glue
Bearing in mind that before I would have bought those little yellow bottles at around £2.00 each, I've already saved quite a bit of money by the change over. De-Solv-It is cheaper and definitely more effective, clearing most stains in one go. One little canister has replaced several little bottles.
~~~ Overall ~~~
I will most certainly carry on with this product which I refer to as "my magic wand". I recently took it on holiday with me. It's handy size and light weight makes it ideal for travelling. It's great for getting out pasta sauce and olive oil marks. I have been able to wear clothes destined for an early life on the tip and refreshed and rejuvenated towels and bedding that were looking a little sad.
I have tried numerous stain removers over the years, but have found none as effective as this.
Highly recommended.
Summary: A very effective stain remover.
- 28/11/07 Great review. I've used this for a while now, and it really does do what it says on the bottle. I've even used it get chewing gum off shoe soles and carpet! The only problem I've ever found with it is that the gas in the cannister tends to run out before the product does, but it's a small price to pay. |
