Advantages: Removes many stubbon stains, Not expensive

Disadvantages: Strong odour, Doesn't remove all stains

My husband came home from work last Friday and noticed that I had something stuck to the back of my skirt - upon inspection we discovered that it was a stone covered in tar, it must have been flicked onto the pavement as a result of resurfacing work near my sons school. My son had obviously picked it up on the bottom of his shoe and as he got into the car he clambered over my seat to get to his own, in the process he must have dropped it onto my seat, it then stuck itself to my skirt.

The skirt I was wearing was pale lilac and pink, it was a chiffon material and I was very anxious to remove the tar as quickly as possible in order to save my skirt. I took the skirt off and immediately immersed it into a bowl of cold water - the stain didn't even begin to budge - next I tried an Asda's own make spray on stain remover, still the stain would not budge so I tried another stain remover I had called Astonish, yet again it didn't even begin to lift the stain. Finally I tried nail polish remover and an antibacterial kitchen cleaner, still no joy with them either. Eventually I decided as a last resort to save the skirt I would have to visit the supermarket and look for a stain remover that removed tar - if indeed there was such a thing.

I drove round a couple of supermarkets including Safeway and The Co-op, neither shops had a stain remover that claimed to remove tar. The last shop I tried was Asda - I visited the laundry aisle and there it was. The words REMOVES TAR written on the front of the can leapt out at me - aha I thought if anything is going to shift the tar it will be this. The product I found was called DE.SOLV.IT Universal.

**WHAT IS DE.SOLV.IT UNIVERSAL**

DE.SOLV.IT Universal is stain remover that is sold in an aerosol spray can. It claims to remove various stubborn stains including all of the following:-

Grease, Tar and Gum, Wet Paint, Crayon, Coffee, Make-Up, Wine, Sauces, Oil and Ink and Grass

It can be used on virtually everything including skin and hair.

**HOW DO I USE IT**

There are clear instructions printed on the reverse on the can. How you use it depends on where the stain is - eg carpet or garment.

It is very easy to use, in the instance of my skirt I just had to remove the cap, shake the can and then spray directly on to the fabric, it suggests that you spray the stain from behind and that you choose an inconspicuous area first - as my skirt would be ruined if it didn't work I just went for it and sprayed the stain remover directly onto the stain, I also sprayed the stain from behind.

I then had to leave it to work for about 5/10 minutes. When I returned to the skirt the stain looked better but there was still a very noticeable mark left on it. The next step is to wash the item using your usual washing powder etc and wash the garment on the same programme you would usually select to wash it. As I put the skirt into the washing machine I did not hold out much hope.

**THE RESULT**

I gingerly opened the washing machine door and slowly removed the skirt - I was still expecting to see the mark but was surprised to see that it had completely disappeared - I was delighted and so impressed that this product worked, especially having tried two other stain removers - neither of which even began to lift the stain.

My husband cut himself shaving this morning and bled onto the collar of his t-shirt, we sprayed it with DE.SOLV.IT and treated it the same way that I treated my skirt - the blood came out and left no trace of a stain.

**THE COST**

I purchased a 100ml can from my local Asda store and I paid £1.98. Considering this saved me from having to throw away what was otherwise a perfectly good skirt I was delighted with the results and would thoroughly recommend DE.SOLV.IT Universal.

**OTHER INFORMATION**

The product is extremely flammable.

DE.SOLV.IT has quite a strong odour and if anything is off-putting about this product it would be the smell - even after washing the garments twice I could still smell the rather overpowering odour.

It's one of the great laws of life. Tar-covered stones never stick to tar-coloured skirts!

This sounds like a godsned I will be buying someone. I always get stains on things as we eat a lot of sauces and spicey foods. I never fail to get some on my T-shirt!
