Advantages: lasting a long time
Disadvantages: A bit dated
Denby pottery has a long history, a seam of clay was found in 1806 when a road was being built. In 1809 a pottery was established using salt glazing products, bottles and jars for many uses. Over the years this developed to making kitchen ware and table ware.
I got married in 1975 and on our wedding present list we put a denby dinner set pottery .Our first choice was a different design Gypsy but it was too expensive for one of our guests and they said would we be happy with a different design we looked at the available designs then and settled for Westbury . This way we could have a set with 6 place settings instead of only four settings of the more expensive ones.
There are several items of ware in this design, plates of different sizes different style bowls, teacups and saucers, serving plates all the items you would need. I have dinner plates, side plates, bowls, teacups and saucers. I have only used the cups and saucers a few times, we prefer a mug. I am wondering whether to try and sell them to free up some space in the cupboard.
Price and availability

This design is not made by the potteries anymore, but you can get some /most of the pieces on line. EBay has a good selection of pieces at http://search.stores.ebay.co.uk/westbury_Pottery_ as does china find at http://www.denbychinafind.co.uk/availstock.htm
I really can not remember how much the pieces cost back then, but on eBay a side plate costs from £3.00 to £5.00 a dinner plate from £3.50 -£10.00p the tea cups and saucers cost about £2.00. I just looked at the prices of Gypsy and they do seem a little more expensive not much but a little. (I still like the look of the Gypsy design better)
So what does the Westbury look like?

This is not a delicate dinner set of plates it is a large thick pottery. The plates and bowls are a large size. I think the design is dated. The background colour is a white oatmeal colour and the plates have a brown rim. The design in the centre of the plates is a group of large brown flowers with a few leaf swirls. This design was on most of the pieces but some like the bowls were just a plain oatmeal colour. . (A lot of the things we had for wedding presents were brown, brown towels) See the picture I found for this category this shows the design. This design is a bold rustic pattern with a country feel to it.
I used this design for best until recently when I decided I was not over keen on the design anymore and use it for everyday now. (And I was running out of tea plates)This pottery is as I said robust, it has lasted us over 32 years, no cracks and the patterns do not seem to have faded.
just found a website that sugests you can wash these in a dishwasher , I would not know as hubby is my dishwasher:-)
Thank you for reading about one of the wedding presents we received. Mary
Summary: A good set of pottery from Denby , now not produced

- 04/10/07 These Denby ranges are becoming quite popular again. Don't split your set up by getting rid of the cups and saucers. If you were ever to sell the whole lot it would fare better to have it all there.
Re: cups and saucers versus mugs. We have been looking for about two years for a new dinner service simply because I didn't want mugs and the ones with cups and saucers were much more than I wanted to pay. Finally I found a sale bargain and have my cups and saucers which has made me stupidly happy! Fiona |
