Advantages: Convenient and effective

Disadvantages: Because it is diluted and ready to use, you're paying a premium price for lots of water

In what has become known as the Consumer Society, it's amazing how much we are all prepared to pay for convenience.

This is exemplified by products such as Screen Wash where some of us pay a huge premium for the ease of use arising from a ready to use product.

Dettol Surface Cleanser is one such product. Whilst Dettol do produce a concentrated disinfectant and at the recommended dilutions this goes a long way, they have also joined their competitors in producing ready to use products wherein a very high proportion of the product content is water - or, as it is euphemistically often referred to - AQUA - who are they trying to kid?

On the trigger spray bottle in which the product is contained, we are not given anything other than an obscure website reference to find full details on the ingredients list (www.rbeuroinfo,com) There must therefore be no legal requirement for this product classification to provide full disclosure on the packaging such that it informs our purchase. I think this is wrong. OK - rant now over.

We buy Dettol Surface Cleanser because we believe it is effective in keeping surfaces clean and safe, but we all rely so much on the power of marketing and the reputation of the brand.

Dettol Surface Cleaner is an anti-bacterial surface cleanser that claims to kill 99.9% of bacteria and viruses. It is non bleach, has no taint and no odour. These latter points are probably good ones; however, lots of us like our work surfaces to smell clean, so even though we don't want to taste it on our sandwiches, the lack of odour may disappoint some in that they smell no proof.

It is a clear colourless liquid and there is no need to rinse after use. It comes with a safety mechanism on the trigger spray, is to be sprayed directly on the surface and allowed to dry. It shouldn't be used on windows, mirrors, fabrics, painted or varnished surfaces.

We have no evidence through usage that the product does not achieve what it claims to achieve in terms of the elimination of bacteria and viruses and it is a brand we trust. On that basis, we continue to buy it and use it and I would give it 5 out of 5.

Summary: We trust it, so we use it.
