Advantages: Supposed to make short work of floor cleaning
Disadvantages: Simply isn'tup to the job
Review of Dettol Direct Floor Cleaner
**The Product**
This is a liquid floor cleaner from the well known company Dettol, which promises to clean floors with a minimum of fuss, no bucket and no rinsing away of suds.
**My Experience**
I bought a bottle of Dettol Direct Floor cleaner in the hope of being able to do a quick kitchen floor clean, instead of my usual mop and bucket rigmarole.
The only entry into our house from the garden is through the kitchen, so as you can imagine, it is a high traffic area!
We have a dog who delights in tramping mud through the kitchen on a daily basis, the kitchen floor does take a bashing and hygiene is obviously of prime importance, especially as we have visiting grandchildren, one of whom is at the toddling stage.
The product seemed like a good idea, just squirt it on and mop. As it's made by Dettol, it should have been fine but in practice it didn't work too well.
I swept the kitchen as usual and then followed the instructions, squirting the floor cleaner in a side to side motion. The product was very dilute and in spite of careful mopping didn't seem to be up to the job! The vinyl flooring looked streaky and dull, the product's smell was quite unpleasant. I'd expected a more natural, pine fresh aroma, not the synthetic pong I got!
It occurs to me that as the product is not rinsed off and the residue therefore remains on the floor, you are not really removing the dirt merely swishing it around. So much for hygiene!
I found the floor dried well but it wasn't as clean as I would have liked. Perhaps in a non animal owning household the results might be better. The product blurb states that you do not need a bucket, but where then am I supposed to rinse my mop I wonder? I have an issue with using the kitchen sink for this as vegetables are prepared and dishes washed in it, so no way do I want floor washing equipment there! Perhaps I could go outside and rinse my mop under the garden tap? That's fine for me, but not everyone has access to such a thing. If you lived in a third floor flat....well...I think you get my drift!
**Conclusion**
Although Dettol Direct floor cleaner sounds like a great idea, offering no fuss, no mess, no bother, the product didn't live up to my expectations.
Thank you for reading

Summary: A great idea but not up to the task.

- 05/08/09 I use Stardrops on the floor - have yet to find anything better. I used to use this in the past because it was convenient but you are right, it isn't very good. |

- 05/08/09 I use the cheap but effective Tesco floor cleaner (it's good on carpets too -only use for small areas there though.) I do like the smell of Dettol, but if it doesn't do the job, there is no point in buying it. To be honest. I think all floor cleaners should be rinsed off, for they will eventually build up and leave filmy residues. |

- 05/08/09 I used something similar a few years ago and agree with the whole moving the dirt around thing, do love the smell of Dettol though x |
