Advantages: Non-bleach , good at killing germs , bacteria and viruses ,versatile .

Disadvantages: Fragrance a little too subtle .

Dettol disinfectant seems to be something that has always been around in my life , well more or less that is .When I was a child Mum always has a bottle of the brown , strong smelling stuff in the home . It had a multitude of uses such as cleaning and adding to the laundry . One of it’s more brutal but necessary uses , was to dab on the umpteen cuts and grazes I had as a clumsy child .

As an adult Dettol is something I buy occasionally ,but there are just so many other products also these days . I frequently use Dettox which is made by the same company . So I was a little intrigued when I saw a bottle of Dettol Disinfectant in my local shops that looked in almost everyway just the same as the original , except in one way. The difference was it was purple . Having a close look the label says Dettol Disinfectant , Kills 99.9% of bacteria and viruses and the fragrance is Lavender and orange oil .There is a little falsher which states NEW .

Having purchased a bottle for 99p , I think , I opened it as soon as I returned home .Twisting off the lid I thought there would be a strong aroma of Orange and Lavender . Wrong .It does not have much of a smell at all . However , if like me , you sit sniffing it for a while , it does hit the back of your nose , so there is definitely more in there than just water .The liquid is clear and colourless and does sort of resemble water .It does not change when water is added to it . I remember the old Dettol’s appearance would change when water was added.

The label claims that Dettol’s unique non-bleach formula kills 99.9% of bacteria, on surfaces , such as E.Coli , Salmonella, Listeria , MRSA and the Flu virus .Having worked in a hospital I am not sure how true these claims are . If it were that simple for MRSA the problem would surely be solved . Anyway Dettol is obviously a useful product .

There is quite a long health warning that includes:
Irritating to skin when used undiluted .
After skin contact rinse with plenty of water .
Keep out of reach of children .
Dangerous to eyes and if swallowed .
Do not use on chidren under the age of three .
There is a website www.rbeuroinfo.com which has full details of ingredients .
Also there is www.dettol.co.uk .

There are full details of how to use on the label and it is worth checking this out . The advice given with regards to diluting are important .

So the verdict

I have found this product handy for a few different uses .

I add a small amount to soiled washing for a really fresh and clean wash . Although the fragrance is subtle you can smell it once it has been diluted or used properly .

When I clean out my washing machine drawer and filter I run a quick maintenance wash . For this the drum is left empty and I use a mixture of washing powder and Dettol . I also dip an old toothbrush into the Dettol and brush the inside of the drawer first . This means any ‘Gunk’ has been loosened and comes away easily .
A capful poured down the plugholes in my bathroom and sink freshens them well . I also pour a diluted mixture down my outside drain .

It's a good product for using to clean wash basins , baths and toilet seats , handles etc .

When I use my carpet shampooer I add a small amount of Dettol to the shampoo . This helps freshens the carpets as well as clean them.Handy when you have two dogs as I do .

I add a little to any washes I give my dog’s bedding . I also use when I wipe the hard surface of my dog’s beds . However this needs to be rinsed well and allowed to dry before they jump back in , much to their annoyance .

I have found there are many uses for this Dettol . For anyone who finds the original a bit too strong smelling , and clinical , this may be a better option . However I think the original is an antiseptic so that’s possibly why it smells so strong . You do need to follow the instructions and take care on who or what you use it .It is always worth testing before using on a new surface .

So overall . A good all round disinfectant that will kill germs and freshen and does not have an overpowering fragrance .

Summary: A good all round product
