Advantages: You can save a whole bunch of money if you're capable.

Disadvantages: It does take practise, and it is possible to make mistakes.

It always amuses me when I see evidence of Britains innate fear when it comes to anything DIY related. Infact, we Brits hate DIY so much, that you can buy socks in shops that say "DIY DAD - DESTROY IT YOURSELF DAD" and these are a popular Christmas gift. I think part of the problem is that DIY is as much about education, research, planning and having the right frame of mind that it is about skill. Obviously though, the more you do, the better your general DIY ability will be.

I find the best way to approach a DIY project is by doing lots of research. Do not try and cut large wooden boards with your junior hacksaw for example, you have to be realistic and make sure you have the right tools. If you search on youtube, often a tutorial for the DIY project you are attempting will be playable, and this will advise you on exactly what you need, and where to get it.

The first thing any DIYer needs to do is get themselves together a little tool kit. A hammer, A screw driver set, some pliers, some clamps etc and a nice little toolbox to keep it all in. This should not cost much to establish.

Next, I'd say it's worth investing in some of the essential power tools. A Drill/Driver (go cordless - honestly you'll appreciate this later!), a circular saw and a jig saw. You'll now have the tools you need for most common DIY jobs, like fixing up a picture, or installing laminate flooring. Over time, you'll find your tool kit increases in what it contains, and you'll have a pretty hefty arsenal eventually, having the machinery to tackle pretty much all odd jobs.

Once you have your generic tools, buy yourself the B&Q book on DIY problems. It has got a chapter on pretty much every type of DIY project, and if you read this before going ahead and tooling about, you're far more likely to have success.

One final tip I'd recommend, is get friendly with some other DIYers. You can then share tips about problems, and you'll also learn many things. Sign up to a DIY themed forum for picture guides and advice requests.

If you go about it the right way, DIY is not too hard, and very rewarding. The main thing is, stay confident!

Pretty soon, I'm sure B&Q and screwfix will be your regular stores!

Summary: DIY is great, and I am confident everyone can be good at it if they approach it right.
