Advantages: Lasts more than one flush
Disadvantages: Price compared to other brands
Hygiene is very important to us all as we know the benefits of looking after our homes and ourselves in terms of good health. One of the areas in my home that I insist upon being spotlessly clean is the bathroom, with particular attention to the toilet area. Although I often get a bit cross with adverts that show huge green germs lurking under our toilet seats, in truth this is almost what happens! Now in fairness to germs and bacteria, we do need some of them in our lives. Not all are bad...and actually, the bad ones help us to get better and stronger as our body immune systems learn to deal with them all.
Bleach is an old favourite to get things clean and there is something wonderful about being greeted by a bleach smell when entering a kitchen or a bathroom. It alerts our senses and tells our brains that this room has been cleaned. There are many different brands of bleach available on the market, however, the market leader is Domestos. Domestos stamped itself on my childhood with the advert 'kills all known germs - dead'. I was impressed with this slogan and like the true slave to advertising that I am, I became a life long fan and purchaser or domestos. Although there are cheaper varieties of bleach available, I want to buy a bleach that has a pleasant smell and lasts in the toilet in particular, for more than one flush. When you pour domestos in and around the toilet, you immediately notice that you do not have to use gallons of the stuff to get a satisfying coating. Once or twice around the bowl is ample and leaves a shiny clean residue that often in our house seems to last for three or four flushes. The range of scents is good, yet the bleach smell is not so strong as to make your eyes feel like they are on fire! The lemon fragrance is a particular favourite of ours as it lingers in the bathroom for some time. Although the bleach can sometimes be expensive compared to own branded products, the quality outweighs the price differential. One bottle can last me two weeks when it is used everyday in the bathroom and the kitchen. I find that Domestos goes onto surfaces in the kitchen particularly well too and a small amount - say a teaspoon full will clean an average sized kitchen with a good cloth.
There is however, some issues with the bottle design. The spout is great and the clear plastic lid good too, but the red plastic around the neck of the spout often feels like serrated plastic. I have, on more than one occasion, cut my finger on the red plastic neck when turning the clear plastic lid. At least cutting myself on a bottle of domestos means that I know my cut will be clean (if not a little stingy!).
I recommend domestos over other brands because of its long lasting smell, the thickness of the bleach and the fact that a little goes a long way, the next time you buy cheap bleach, compare the two...don't be fooled by a false economy!
Summary: Worth every penny
