Dr. Beckmann Glowhite
Advantages: Effective for whitening whites, UV protection, great price
Disadvantages: Not a disadvantage but don't expect item to remove stains, its a whitener
With two young girls, one who is massively into her clothing already at just 6, I really try and look after their (and our) clothes. We do spend a lot on clothing each month and I like to make sure that items stay looking good, otherwise what's the point in buying it in the first place. I'm always on the lookout for products that can keep the quality of the condition of the clothes and for a while now I have been using Dr Beckmann's glowhite.
Glowhite is a product that you put in your washing machine during the washing process for white items and it will restore the whites that sometimes tend to dull and go a light grey colour. I often find the worst offenders are my girls vests which despite religiously only washing on a white wash, tend to tinge a grey colour fairly quickly. Rather than buying new vests, as the only thing wrong with them is the colour, I use a glowhite sachet to bring them back to life. I find that it makes most items look brand new again.
There are obviously certain items that will be beyond repair, or will need an alternative product to return them back to new. For example, one of the first times I used the product, I decided to try it on a white t-shirt of my youngest daughters which I loved, but which my mother in law had decided to feed her spaghetti bolognaise while she was wearing it. I was less than impressed, and pinned all my hope on glowhite to get the stain out, but unfortunately it didn't work. Glowhite isn't for stains, it is a whitener.
A handy little extra to the product which I find quite impressive, is the added UV sun protection it offers. Once you have washed your whites with glowhite, the clothing receives a coating of UV protection from the sun's rays. When we are due to go on holiday and I get the holiday clothes out of the loft, I will often give the girls whites a wash with glowhite to freshen them up, and knowing they have added UV protection is a bonus. I wouldn't pin all my hope on the protection from the clothing, as you cannot possibly know the extent of the protection or how many washes it will last without needing another top-up. However, it is nice to know that they have an added little bit of protection when you are on holiday. Just a nice little extra in my opinion.
*According to scientists, the protection offered by glowhite is as follows: Standard t shirt washed using glowhite UPF range 15/ 20 % UV radiation blocked 93.3% 95.9%.
I generally wash most of my loads on a 30 wash when they aren't stained or dirty (trying to save the world and all that jazz), so it is another little bonus that glowhite works on as low a wash as 20. Certainly a clever little product.
To use glowhite is so easy. All you have to do is pop a sachet in the drum before you load the clothes, then continue with the washing routine as usual. The sachets are porous so glowhite will slowly release throughout the cycle of the wash. Just remember to remove the sachet at the end of the cycle, and that's it, done!
Expect to pay £1 for a box of 3 sachets from Tesco's.
