Advantages: Really effective, very cheap

Disadvantages: Rubber gloves are needed

Soda crystals are one of those products that our grandmothers had in their cupboards but have since gone out of fashion, while we replace them with expensive and heavily scented cleaning products. Thankfully they are coming back into fashion through shows like How Clean Is Your House.

Soda crystals have an incredible range of uses but I use them in three major ways- laundry stain removal, heavy duty cleaning and sink cleaning. I would suggest following the instructions on the package, but as a rule I use half a cup of soda crystals in the washing machine for laundry stains, two cups down the sink overnight for stinky sinks and a couple of tablespoons to use as a exfoliating cleaner for really dirty surfaces.

As well as being very effective, soda crystals are also very cost effective- I pay about £1 for a 1 kg bag which lasts me at least a couple of months. How can you argue with prices like that!

Some people may not like the smell which I just think is very clean smelling and a big improvement on bleachy sprays. The only downside is that it is very hard on skin and needs to be used with rubber gloves.

Overall, I really recommend you give soda crystals a go- the most you'll lose is a couple of pounds.

Summary: Loads of uses round the house- a store cupboard essential
