Advantages: quick drying, no drips, low odour
Disadvantages: doesnt cover strong colours with the recommended coats
Dulux quick drying wood primer and undercoat I chose Dulux for no particular reason other than it was a name I was familiar with, not being heavily into DIY, I assumed it was a good make of paint. Having a lot of gaudy coloured paintwork to restore to white, I bought a large tin of quick drying wood primer and undercoat. Two and a half litres cost £19.98 from B&Q. The tin claims it is a combined primer and undercoat for ‘most’ new or bare wood either interior or exterior. Woods that will need a special primer prior to glossing include creosoted wood or highly resinous wood. The primer is a water based acrylic mix, which it is claimed will dry fast and be re coatable in just 2 hours. This sounds like the perfect stuff for me, as I like to see immediate effects from my labours. I had done all my woodwork preparation prior to opening the tin, as once I get going with a brush it is hard for me to stop. If it’s still it gets a coat! To prepare your surfaces to be painted fill any holes or imperfections with a suitable filler and allow to dry, then rub down until smooth. Give all the surface to be painted a rub over with sandpaper then wipe with a damp cloth to remove excess dust. This quick sand over will provide a good ‘key’ for the new paint to stick to. Now comes the exciting bit ……. Open your tin, ok so I know its not that exciting, but there is something so nice about a lovely tin of WHITE after looking at nauseating orange and lime green all over the doors etc! Stir the paint thoroughly, I tend to keep a small strong piece of bamboo cane around for this purpose, make sure the paint is well mixed. If you are painting bare areas of wood, then 2 coats of Dulux quick drying wood primer and undercoat will be sufficient. For already painted areas then the tin claims that one coat should be sufficient. Guess again! This guideline may be sufficient for &
#8216;white’ or very light coloured areas of wood. As I have already mentioned the house we have just moved into has lime green and pink doors, with lime green woodwork. I have already given the doors and woodwork 2 coats of primer/undercoat, leaving the required 2 hours between coats. I can still see in places pink and green quite strongly. I would recommend for wood a strong colour 3 coats of Dulux quick drying wood primer and undercoat. The claim that the paint dries in 2 hours is very accurate, so 3 coats would be fairly easy to achieve in one day, I managed to give all the woodwork in the house 2 coats in one day, with a 3rd coat being required on some parts today. On bare wood the paint covers very well, and has to date only required 2 coats – the recommended amount. It has provided a good smooth and sound base for the top coat of paint. The paint itself doesn’t smell too bad, with other brands of undercoating paint I have done one room and has to call it a day, as the headache from the paint is unbearable. As previously mentioned I was painting all day with this paint and didn’t have a headache at all. It is advisable to open all the windows and doors however, especially working in small rooms. The undercoat and primer is a good consistency, by that I mean it is not too thick but not too thin as to cause runs and drips after application. It is very easy to apply and being water based any mistakes can easy be rectified with a handy damp cloth. Any body part that receives a splash/dollop/generous coating of paint can be cleansed easily with ordinary household soap, without irritation or too much scrubbing. Remember to keep children and pets well away from the areas to be painted (easier said than done believe me!) Brushes are easily cleaned with water also. Each two and a half litre tin will cover up to 18 square metres.
