Advantages: Removes most stains effectively.

Disadvantages: Sometimes needs a second application on chocolate stains.

I guess I'm a bit odd when it comes to clothes. They can be full of holes, but I can't stand having stains on them. I like my whites to be brilliant white and my family wear a lot of white and pale colours. My partner frequently gets oil on his clothes and my daughter, who is 14 months old, gets anything and everything on her clothes. That is why for me, Dylon Fabric Care stain removers are essential items. I have tried other stain removers such as Stain Devils, Ace Bleach and Vanish, but haven't had much success with them.

There are three different stain removers available from Dylon. One is for dry clean fabrics and the other two are for washable fabrics. I only use the ones for washable fabrics, so those are the ones I'll concentrate on. I do however know that the dry clean one is for stains such as oils, make-up, shoe polish, wax, adhesives, sauces and some others. They each cost £1.89 for a 75ml bottle.


STAIN REMOVER 1

The first stain remover is ingeniously called 'Stain Remover 1'. This is the one I use the most and it comes in a blue bottle. It's great for getting out curry1` stains. Printed on the side of the bottle is a list of the types of stains you can use it on:

OIL BASED: cooking oils, butter, chocolate, oil, grease, tar, hand cream and lipstick.
FOOD/DRINK: beer, ketchup and sauces.
COLOUR: grass, pollen and spices.
INKS: biro, felt tip pen and shoe polish.
STICKY/WAXY: gum, glue, nail varnish, emulsion paint, furniture polish and candle wax.

How to use:
* Always test for colourfastness in an inconspicuous area.
* Always treat stains when fresh, if possible.
* Scrape of any excess first.
* Place a clean absorbent cloth underneath the affected area.
* Dab the stain with the applicator ensuring that the stain remover covers all the affected area.
* Wash and dry article in the normal way.
* Leave stubborn stains for 10-15 minutes befo
re washing.
* Repeat process if necessary.
Not suitable for use on carpets.

And here's the technical data...

This product contains amongst other ingredients: 5-15% Non-ionic surfactants. 15-30% Anionic surfactants. IRRITANT - FLAMMABLE.

From my own experience I can tel you that when the Dylon is applied fresh to stains, the stain will usually come out first wash. Exceptions to this are when the stain is very ingrained, tomato based food stains and some oil based stains such as chocolate. Then you may need two washes with Dylon to get it out. If the stained garment has been washed more than two or three times then it is unlikely that the Dylon will work; which is why you need to use it when the stain is fresh.

I have never had any problems with colourfastness and I haven't bothered placing a cloth underneath when I treat the stain since I first used it. I use it too often to bother! I have also left clothes with Dylon on for well over 15 minutes and it has never done any harm.


STAIN REMOVER 2

Stain Remover 2 comes in a green bottle. This one is more for the stains you have to be a bit careful with. That is to say, the ones where if you put the wrong thing on them, ie. Ammonia, you can fix them rather than remove them. It is recommended for:

FOOD/DRINK: tea, coffee, milk, fruit drinks, gravy, wine, beetroot, cola and tobacco.
BIOLOGICAL: blood, urine, perspiration, collar and cuff grime, mud and more.

* Test for colourfastness in an inconspicuous area.
* Wet the affected area then place a clean absorbant cloth underneath and dab the stain with the applicator.
* Wash as usual at the recommended temperature.
* Leave stubborn stains for 30 minutes before washing.
Do not use on carpets.

And the technical data...

Contains amongst other ingredients: Less than 15% Anionic surfactants. Less than 5% Non-ionic surfactants. Enzymes. Preservatives. r>
Again I do cheat a little with this stain remover. I don't put the cloth underneath and I don't wet it the garment first, though this isn't purposely done it's because I forget. Yet it still gets the stain out. As with the other stain remover, I have never had any problems with colourfastness.


There is one more thing I feel I should mention. A good wash powder helps. I tried a cheaper powder for a bit and found that though the Dylon still worked I tended to have to do a second wash on the stain more often.
