They are in a resealable pouch that keeps them moist. You sprinkle them over your carpet, particularly on the bits in hallways that tend to get grubby, rub them in and leave for 30minutes. The granules are like small particles of damp foam. You can clearly see them on the surface of the carpet. You then need to rub them in with a brush, to get them right down between the carpet fibres. I am reviewing the products that you can buy to go with the Dyson Zorb, although you can actually use them with any dyson make. The Zorb cleaner itself it equal to any other dyson, all of which are fantastic in my opinion. They are expensive but worth it.
